Obama On Perry: “I’ll Cut Him Some Slack”
At a Sunday campaign appearance in Iowa, Perry said one reason he was running for President was in order to to "make sure that every young man and woman who puts on the uniform of this nation respects highly the president of the United States."

Appearing on an episode of The Situation Room, program host Wolf Blitzer raised these comments to President Obama. The President replied:

*****You know, Mr. Perry just got into the presidential race. I think that everybody who runs for president, it probably takes them a little bit of time before they start realizing that this isn't like running for governor or running for senator or running for Congress, and you've got to be a little more careful about what you say. But I'll cut him some slack. He's only been at it for a few days now.

Although Blitzer did not raise it in his question, President Obama's remarks could just as easily serve as a riposte to Perry's ruminations about Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's "treasonous" behavior. Those comments have already brought a slew of condemnations, including from Obama's spokesman and even from former appointees of George W. Bush.

67. I do think the Pres was sniping at Perry.
The whole "I'll cut him some slack" line strongly implied there was a fuckup on Perry's part for which Obama was cutting him slack...

9. Very unlikely ... Perry would be smart to let this die, unless he wants
to be repeatedly asked if openly discussing the succession of TX from the US would also be considered treasonous.

13. Anytime he could get the President to address him personally...
increases his stature. The President was smart not to attack Perry but I think he left himself open by his response. Just my opinion.

When he is the nominee of the Republicans, is the time to attack, is what the WH is thinking.

It would appear the only alternative you allow us is to have the President act out like a petulant kindergarten student.

However, I would hazard that any response he gave would elicit a negative opinion from those for whom dogma is more a priority than actual analysis...

82. I would like him to stand up for us I just don't think this was a big deal
he said ole Ricky was new to this and he would cut him some slack, how insulting is that to an egotistic fake like Perry? Obama really needs to win and he needs to be clever in how he does it. Unless some superhuman progressive steps up to the plate Obama is it.

I would have adored it if he would have kept his promises, kept his word to the Unions and would stop asking people to sacrifice even more than we already have. I have skipped on having any kind of a life because of the sacrifices I have made over the last 4 years and I'm not willing to give anymore so I do get that. I would have loved it if he would have been tough on single payer, and told the republicans that they would not be able to hold the country hostage anymore because there was a new kid in town that didn't suffer fools but this comment about Perry was ok, I am fine with it.

Up to here with Obama. Keep living in your dream world where only Laura Ingram has no use for Obama. It's not like that in the real world. Obama has worn out his welcome with many of us who voted, worked, and contributed to him in 2008, by acting more like a Republican president than a Democratic one. But just keep spending your time trying to insult me, instead of facing reality. Facing reality is obviously more than you can handle.

52. Excellent Comeback
The Republicans are about to start their real primary race in which they will start tearing into each other. Obama needs to just sit on the sidelines and let them do that. If he starts mudslinging now, people will be sick of hearing it before the actual election campaign gets started. Let the Republicans pound each other for the next few months, then step in and finish off the "winner" of the primaries.

62. He was actually insulting Perry, but he is in a position to do whatever the hell he wants.
He took on the Clinton machine (and no I don't hate the Clintons, but they had a hell of a machine). He took on a war hero Republican. He beat both. It is YOU who are in no position to tell Barack Obama how to deal with candidates potentially running against him. He has a track record. You have nothing.

64. Nuance was perfect. It's not his place to be overly overt just yet.
Now is the time for us to watch - and be entertained by - the Republicans eating each other. Then we step in and rip apart what's left when they're done. :D

66. I thought Obama's comment was a pretty admirable piece
of snark, actually.

By cutting him slack with the remark that he (Perry) has only been at it for a few days now, it makes Perry look rather like a child having a temper tantrum.

Or a pesky little fly not worth more than an annoyed swat...

72. it was the perfect response, for several reasons:
1. When your opponent is shooting himself in the foot, you step aside and let him

2. Made it obvious that Perry is not a concern of his. Even if he was, you don't want to show it.

3. Getting down and dirty with Perry raises Perry up to the President's level. He's not. Show him for the amateur he is.

4. The Obama team would much rather face Perry than romney. No reason to knock Perry's campaign down yet. They want to pump it up for now.

I swear, there are so many political amateurs on this site. If you think this was a bad move, you're one of them.

76. +1
It was a 'grown up' and politically savvy response. The President's gracious response, however, did not prevent Karl Rove and the Foxnews trolls from accusing him of "lecturing" Perry.

Mr. Obama shit in Perry's hat, and handed it back to him...in a nice way.

88. Obama was just petting his future victim. That's all that was.
Then he'll take him into "the cutting room" and use a chainsaw to cut him into pieces.

You'll see.
Obama is a genius.

He uses words like bullets. He knows what is going on.

"Say hello to my little fren'."
