After I took this series of shots last year, I saw some desert dawn works by Jennifer Wu of San Francisco. Bingo. Same genre.

Is 2 black and white film? That's what it looks like on my computer, or did it just come out that way? Either way it is a stunning photo.

Number 2 is special. It is a HDR (high dynamic range) photo. It is actually three shots of the forest at three exposures (+2, 0, -2), merged in PhotoShop. I found the B&W version much more striking than the color options.

I react most strongly to light and color -- and particularly to photos where the light seems to be streaming through a veil from another world. Both of those do that for me.

#4 is intense, but I've seen a lot of other intense sunset pictures. And #2 and #5 work as abstract design -- which clearly is the chief thing for a lot of people. But neither of them has that peculiarly magical quality I look for.

Picture 2 is a great picture. The rest are kind of bleh. I hope you don't take offense to the criticism, but I don't like the framing in any of the other pictures except for number 2. 4 isn't great but the flaws are less noticible. I know I'm being a little harsh, so I appologize.

PS. All are better than what an ameture shot would look like. I don't want it to come off like that. I'm just speaking from a perspective of if I would buy the pictures what I would be looking at.

Look they're all wonderful, as you know. But the others (not so much #2) are standard fare. Typical. Photographic cliches (no offense meant there). You can see them anywhere. I've never seen a photo quite like #1. AND, it's reminiscent to me of an Ansel Adams photo, even tho it's in color. I just think it's far more of an art photo than the others (#2 comes close).

NOW, if there happens to be a patriotic bent to the contest, go for the flag or any of the others.
