Challenging the law: Mom questions requirement to test student with disabilities
Robert Mattox Johnson has anxiety, sensory and attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, as well as a language-based learning disability that means he struggles with reading and writing. Mattox's mother, Sarah Johnson, fears that forcing him to take the state standardized PASS test 'would be setting him up to fail.'

Johnson's behavior disorder isn't immediately apparent, but he has impulsive control disorder and his sweet demeanor can turn into physical aggression the moment he feels frustrated.

It's one of a number of behavioral and learning disabilities Mattox has, but none of those exempt him from taking the state's standardized test.

Federal and state laws hold schools accountable for the achievement of all students, including those who have disabilities such as Mattox. In South Carolina, that means all third- through eighth-grade students must take the state Palmetto Assessment of State Standards.

2. More parents need to boycott these asinine tests and keep their kids home on testing days (or is it
testing WEEK, for fuck's sake, in some districts?).

8. Absolutely.
It's usually testing week! Teaching to the test is all that goes on the rest of the weeks. Our education system has been reduced to nothing at all worth while.

3. my friend worked for a school district that solved that problem.
they put all the special needs children in one school so the other 5 could pass the tests.

Thought I was gonna faint.

Standardized tests measure one thing---your ability to take standardized tests. I am fairly sure I could pass any test on any subject as long it was written in English by following a few simple rules, like "sometimes" is almost always true and "always" is almost never true. Until someone starts offering jobs in test taking, I am going to consider them a waste of time.

5. The IEP ( Individual Education Program) content is mandated by law to specifically cover State ....
and local assessments. This will vary from State to State but there are very specific Federally mandated requirements on testing that if not followed can result in legal actio

Disabled or not.
