Michele Bachmann: Gay Families Are Not ‘Families’
GREGORY: Can a gay couple who adopt children, in your mind, be considered a “family”?
BACHMANN: When it comes to marriage, and family, my opinion is that marriage is between a man and a woman. And I think that’s been my view —
GREGORY: So a gay couple with kids would not be considered a “family” to you?
BACHMANN: You know, all of these kind of questions really aren’t about what people are concerned about right now.

http://thinkprogress.org/lgbt/2011/08/15/295737/michele-bachmann-gay-families-not-families/

Bachmann (and her supporters) are simply on a different plane of existence from me on this one. A couple with a child/children is not a family?

1. Actually, she's right.
Edited on Tue Aug-16-11 04:00 PM by Brickbat
When she says "all of these kind of questions really aren’t about what people are concerned about right now," she's absolutely right. People are concerned about jobs and supporting their families, whether those families are "gay families" or not.

OMG, did I JUST SAY THAT?

14. Many people could care if gay couples are together, married, kids, etc. It's
asses such as Bachmann and the like that build it up as issues, and authoritarians, misguided power-seeker preachers and the like.

Exactly what "is" on peoples minds are jobs and supporting their families, and if this country even has a future.

The real needs/issues are neglected as the place sinks down the drain.

These republicans are such F'en fools and terrorists.

...then why does she think we need a Federal Marriage Amendment?

37. I see the flipside to this point.
And that is that you could see this as a whole new argument. It's not "gay people are threatening my marriage. My ability to hang onto my job is."

And with that, there's no way in hell that the republicans could get away with using the gay-marriage scapegoat in this election as they did in 2000 and 2004. We have a whole new set of problems to worry about.

38. And it's always the GOP that tries to distract
by using gay marriage as a wedge. Except when it's inconvenient for the GOP, of course.

Put me on the side of all who are oppressed, because to have a boot on their throats means the oppressed frighten the beejeebers out of the powers that be.

44. No, Bachmann is for a federal marriage amendment, unlike Obama.
And Obama said he's "evolving" on the issue-- a wishy-washy argument, I know, but certainly different than Bachmann's stance.

5. I like to know this - If Michelle Bachmann is subservient to her husband
who is going to run the country if (god forbid) she's elected President?

I mean could you see her a-hole husband butting in telling her how to run the country when she was elected. And not the helpful way of making suggestions, like previous First Ladies have done but actually telling his wife how to do stuff.

:scared:

This is the man that told his wife she must be a tax lawyer and she was compelled to agree to him.

31. Not likely.
The fact it that she has already thought of this and already has this as a plan. She's an end of times dominionist. First theocracy and then armageddon. She wants to drop the bomb so the Jeebus can come back and save us all.

Feel better now?

it is hard to know what she will do imo. Does she know where North Korea is on a map? We should give her and Rick Perry a geography test, in public. NCLB standards.

36. Well, SOMEbody would have to tell her what to do.
Pretty sure she doesn't have a clue what the presidency's all about, and neither does Marcus. What worries me most is WHO would be calling the shots and the depths of despair into which our country would descend as a result. Sometimes I think it can't get much worse, but of course I know it could.

6. No, Ms. Bachmann, people aren't concerned about that right now
Which means you can probably get away with being as venal and petty as you possibly can for quite some time. And, even though it's not really a major concern for people, I have little doubt that you will at some point take the opportunity to indulge a little casual gay-bashing. After all, who's going to notice? Well, besides the people affected and those who love and support them. Which means nobody likely to come into contact with your bigoted self.

she's such a f*cking arse. she'd round every GLBTer up to go to ex-gay clinics, and strip everyone of their jobs, money, if she could. This woman is as blindly wrong and adamant about her beliefs as any person with power in the US. What a blight she is...

25. Exactly, whenever someone says gay marriage is going to affect their
straight marriage it's one huge WTF to me. IMO, then maybe they should just get divorced if their marriage is that frail. What incredibly weak minded ignorant people. It demonstrates to me how weak and frail their world is ...

19. You are almost in the same boat with us gays.
Though there aren't laws against single people, there are often disparities. When I was single, I can't tell you the number of times I was asked to work overtime or cover shifts "because I didn't have a family to go home to!" Child leave, maternity/paternity leave, and the like discriminate against child-free people, often single, though not always. Or how it is considered "dreadful" or somehow "sad" you are "alone." Trust me, I love my partner, but there are times I love being by myself!

11. The only 'family' she accepts is a traditional nuclear family.
It presumably even omits a man and women who are not married, no matter whether they have children.

It seems to omit grandparents and grandchildren families; older siblings raising younger siblings; extended families raising children without the presents of either biological parent; fictive kin of all types.

In short, either Michelle has a very limited view of family, or in order to maintain her anti-LGBT biases, she will also exclude many heterosexual and/or nonsexual families.

And in so doing, she excludes the truly traditional families in the world and in our own history.

In short, this is, and she is, pathetic.

42. "Not about what people are concerned about right now"
If someone is living in their car, or hasn't eaten for three days, LGBT rights isn't exactly in the forefront of their minds (which is part of the problem right there). And anyone with a sense of dignity would respect that.

But, as has been pointed out above, it's obvious that this is a central issue for the far right. And THAT should be a cause for concern, IMO.
