Nice Guys and Women Earn the Least Amount of Money

"Nice guys finish last" the old adage goes, and a new study suggests there just might be some truth to this dictum — at least when it comes to workplace earnings.

The study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Behavior, found that men who described themselves as nice -- agreeable, cooperative and kind -- earned 18 percent less than men who characterized themselves as disagreeable and aggressive. Women earned the least amount of money, but women who called themselves disagreeable made about 5 percent more than their more friendly female counterparts.

...

Those who described themselves as disagreeable may pursue their own career interests and, in turn, salary negotiations, more aggressively, experts said.

This may also explain why so many assholes end up in management positions.

4. I'd rather be a poor nice guy than a rich asshole anyday.
I know I will live longer and have less health problems overall.

8. right on! I used to work in collections & they said I wasn't hard enough on people & didn't scare
them enough. I said I'm not scaring a woman who just lost her 70 year old husband and is losing her home, just so she'll make a bigger payment on her mortgage. I made the required collections being nice, but by no means was the top earner, that was for the evil folks, and I mean that. I've heard people be so horrible to people (saying things like low-life, loser, etc) that I've told them they were jerks when they got off the phone, and if I got those customers after them a week or two later, I would be told how nice I was, and sometimes even get a payment from them when the others hadn't. I will never give in to "money", and I support your statement, Javaman, I'd rather be a nice guy and feel better!

9. Someone once told me I looked good for my age.
I said it was because I hadn't "been beaten down by success".

5. Sort of explains my situation. Oh, I know full well how to go about making
a ton of money in my work, it's just that I couldn't sleep at night if I misled people in the way it requires.

10. Having done it both ways, over 20 years, it's true: you get what you negotiate, not what you deserve
And the earlier you start negotiating, the better. It's kind of like investing, that way. I learned to negotiate late, and I bet it's cost me at least a few hundred thousand dollars over 20 years.
