Bachmann flubs Elvis Presley's birthday
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/onpolitics/post/2011/08/michele-bachmann-elvis-presley-birthday-/1

GOP presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann mistakenly wished Elvis Presley a "happy birthday" today during a campaign event in South Carolina.

Presley -- "The King" to music fans everywhere -- died 34 years ago on this date.

According to CNN's Political Ticker, the Minnesota congresswoman asked everyone at her rally in Spartanburg to wish a "happy birthday" to Presley after she took the stage. She had played his song Promised Land at the event.

Bachmann is a Presley fan, having said during a debate in June in New Hampshire that she keeps Elvis' Christmas music on her iPod.

Presley was born Jan. 8, 1935.

7. Her handlers were probably born after Elvis died. They heard
something on the news this morning about Elvis while they were sipping their lattes, but weren't really listening. So they told her about it, and so it goes. She seems to get misinformation from them all the time. Like that business about John Wayne she crowed about. Someone Googled badly. Someone never heard of John Wayne Gacey, and may have thought that was The Duke's real name. And so...

You get the staff you pay for. Truly.

20. "sipping their lattes,"
Why do people say that like it's some elite, exclusive thing? I don't actually drink them myself, but loads of non elite normals do.

21. It's more like it's a youthful thing, which was my intent.

It wasn't meant as anything else. Frankly, I don't consider go-fers hired by politicians to be part of any elite. I've been around too many of them to ever think that.

Now, I don't drink lattes. My generation drinks strong coffee black. I prefer French Roast, with a shot of espresso in it. I'd drink a full mug of espresso, but I can't afford that at Caribou Coffee.

If latte references are some sort of cliche, I wasn't aware of it. Sorry for the confusion.

27. I just didn't get the reference or what it was supposed to mean
I see it bandied about and thought in a lot of contexts it's like the arugula thing with Obama (IIRC)...thanks for the clarification!

And I agree with you on the coffee...!

14. Yep
I'm not a fan of Elvis Presley by any means, but if you're going to hold yourself out as some kind of fan, you don't make such an elementary mistake. It's like saying you're a John Cougar Mellencamp fan and citing "Born in the USA" as your favorite song. First, it's John Mellencamp, and second, Mellencamp did "R-O-C-K in the USA," not "Born in the USA."

Thinking that the day the King died is his birthday -- that's treason.

15. It's so like her to confuse birth and death...
Not surprising at all.

And I'm betting the Presley estate wasn't asked for permission to use his song. Those asshats never ask first.
