ACLU files suit against Kansas anti-abortion law
Source: Raw Story
By Kase Wickman

The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit Tuesday in an attempt to eliminate a recent Kansas law that prevents insurance companies from covering abortion services in regular plans.

The suit, ACLU of Kansas and Western Missouri v. Praeger, is the first challenge to the anti-abortion laws that 13 states have passed since 2010.

The bill was passed by the state's legislature in May, and requires that women purchase a separate rider plan with extra premiums if they want to obtain an abortion. The conservative rationale behind the law said that this way, those morally opposed to abortion would not subsidize other women's terminations of pregnancy.

This bill came on top of other onerous restrictions on abortion that were signed by Gov. Sam Brownback (R) in April, including a ban on abortions past 20 weeks and a requirement that parents be informed about their children's abortions and give consent.

1. Why stop there?
Let's not cover birth control and sterilizations because Catholics oppose those. How about blood transfusions since the Jehovah Witnesses find those objectionable. I forget which religious group opposes these but there is even some who oppose childhood inoculations.

I am sure there are others. Insane.

2. It isn't only religious groups
that oppose these things. Please do not blame all of the right wing wackiness on people of faith. We are not all idiots.

And I have seen nothing trying to ban blood transfusions or childhood inoculations.

4. If you haven't seen such efforts, you need to look harder.
Perhaps Googling "vaccination religious-exemption" will prove
educational for you?

5. I didn't say
I hadn't seen religious groups looking for exemptions...I said I haven't seen any religious groups trying to ban them altogether, like some groups have done with things like abortion and equal marriage rights. There is a difference between looking to be allowed and exemption - (with which, btw, I do not agree), and looking to ban something. Perhaps Googling the definitions of "exemption" and "ban" will be educational for you.

3. Don't they believe in free enterprise? Restricting health insurer practices like that.
;-)
