Army aviation’s $400M home
More than 100 attack helicopters headed to Bliss
By Robert Gray

FORT BLISS – Sporting black aviators and Army-short but carefully styled jet-black hair, Maj. Lucinda Wilson looks the part of a pilot as she walks what may be the most technologically advanced maintenance hangar in Army aviation. It has that new car smell.

“I can’t even describe how tickled we are about this,” she says.

Wilson is the provisional commander of the 1st Armored Division’s Combat Aviation Brigade. The Army has given Wilson and her staff of 40 the immense job of setting up the brigade’s brand new, $400-million home at Fort Bliss, ahead of the swift arrival of almost 2,000 soldiers and 100 helicopters.

They are expected to arrive suddenly in September and, while there is no firm timeline, another 1,000 or so soldiers will trickle in after the first wave, according to Wilson.
