CBS Columnist ripped after accusing Tim Tebow(QB-Broncos) of 'blasphemy'
Edited on Tue Aug-16-11 12:07 PM by RamboLiberal
A national sports columnist says his hate mail has been "going nuts" since writing a column accusing quarterback Tim Tebow of "blasphemy" for believing his faith will help him succeed in the NFL.

-----

Gregg Doyel of CBSSports.com tweeted yesterday that readers and tweeters have been ripping him since questioning Tebow's comments to the Denver Post that he's "relying as always on my faith" as he competes for the starting QB job with the Denver Broncos.

"Its like someone spilled Pat Robertson all over my inbox," Doyel tweeted.

-----

Tebow has been a great billboard for Christianity -- just as Muhammad Ali has been a great billboard for Islam, and Sandy Koufax a great billboard for Judaism -- but that doesn't mean he will be rewarded with a starting job in the NFL. Maybe deep inside his heart Tebow knows that, but from the outside it doesn't look that way. From the outside it looks like Tebow equates his love for God in heaven with tangible rewards here on earth. And that's more than wrong. It's blasphemy.

I personally hate all these "believers" spouting that God has an interest in who wins a professional game or championship or a political office for that matter! I say right on Doyel!

6. People of faith frequently apply it to any and all life circumstances. Especially challenges.
Certainly they do when it comes to stuff like kicking the booze/drugs, etc. I really don't know what constitutes 'blasphemy,' but I wouldn't fault a person of faith who credits it to their ability to overcome obstacles. Probably it really does help sometimes. I'm not a believer so I don't think anybody receives divine rewards for having faith, but I don't doubt that it can help one overcome obstacles by helping them get in the right frame of mind to do what they need to do.

I doubt it will help Tebow a whole lot in getting a starting gig, but whatever. The whole thing, from the reporter's accusation to the negative reaction, seems like a tempest in a teapot to me.

28. Your first paragraph could have been written by every sports psychologist I've ever talked to.
Put your worries somewhere, ANYWHERE but on the sports field. There, you need to focus on the task at hand.

22. I wonder how football
fits in the commandment "Keep Holy the Sabbath." Football doesn't strike me as particularly holy.

Seems these true believers who take the scriptures literally would have serious objections to gladiator like sporting events on the Sabbath.

10. I'm more concerned about loony Christians who may actually wield power
I've given up giving a shit about athletes thanking deities after touchdowns or praying for a spot on the team. When Tim Tebow can reverse Roe v. Wade or ban the teaching of evolution in school, let me know.

17. Sportswriters determine blasphemy. Who knew.
If someone uses faith in his personal beliefs like a crutch that has helped them all along and they want to continue with that crutch, there is a sometimes spoken need to kick that crutch out from under that person. Just say'n.

19. Who does determine blasphemy?
It might be plausible for a sportswriter to have studied some theology in his spare time and know enough to make the call.

20. Here's a link to Doyel's original column
http://www.cbssports.com/columns/story/15406131/unbelievable-tebow-believes-faith-equates-to-starting-in-nfl

Doyel apparently is an evangelical Christian, too:

I've spent years in church, praying to the same God. I've shuffled to the front of the church in tears a time or two when pastor Guy Melton in Florida or Steve Larson in North Carolina made a call for us sinners. Is that enough for you to take what I'm saying as commentary, not hate speech?

so maybe he knows something about what counts as blasphemy in that community.

27. "relying as always on my faith". So fucking what? What would DU do if Tebow relied on ROCKS?
Pine Trees? Fucking Acorns? Left Front Tires? Why does DU even fucking CARE what Tebow relies on?

Get over it people. Some folks believe in things. That they might not believe in the same things you do just chaps your fucking hide doesn't it? "Oh My Fucking God! (how's that for blasphemy) Tebow relies on faith? Oh. My. Fucking. God, what a lunatic asshole batshit crazy loser nobody!"

Talk to a sports psychologist some time and ask them how athletes focus on the task at hand by believing in something.

I hope he starts every fucking game, sets passing, rushing, and scoring records, wins the Super Bowl AND MVP, and then thanks God for helping him get there.

So many DU heads will explode that there will be brains splattered on the INSIDE of my computer monitor.

34. Actually more than a few of us find it utterly hilarious..
God's going to help Tebow make it big time in the NFL..

A God that cares about such utter trivia when kids are dying of starvation practically every minute is a sick joke at best.

I'm surrounded IRL by people who think just like Tebow and my only defense is a vigorous sense of humor.

35. Not going to fault Tebow.
He is well-liked in Florida and seems to be an ok fellow who does his best to follow his faith. I'm a nonbeliever myself, but I can understand what he's saying and it is not that God cares what team wins or personally helps him throw footballs. He believes his faith helps him do his best. He is intense and committed and works a lot harder than most people and that is what will help him most. Even though he may believe it is his faith in god, it is actually his own work ethic and determination to succeed which may get him the starting QB position. Who knows, perhaps it is his faith that makes him work so hard.
