Corndog Photo comment: Shouldn't a candidate who is under constant scrutiny
try and avoid camera ops such as the picture of her eating a corndog. The potential for ridicule is extremely high and an image that you would not want to live on.

I see this as a gaffe on Bachmann's part, and a failure of her PR team to let this happen. At least Bush and his team knew enough to have him eat an ear of corn, which even DU was able to photoshop into him eating a squirrel and a kitten. The fact we are discussing it here ad nauseum attests to the fact that it was a gaffe. It sure as hell is not a presidential look that one would want to be conveying.

1. No she did this on purpose. She doesn't have the sex appeal that Palin does, and so
she has to do something REALLY vulgar to get people talking about the double entendre potential so that she can come back with, 'oh, you're just being a pervert - I LIKE corn dogs very much, and wouldn't have missed having an Iowa corn dog for the world.'

2. If she did that on purpose then she is even more of an idiot than the half term quitter.
I really have a hard time believing that the photo op was on purpose. If it was on purpose, I cannot believe that she understood the double entendre possibility. Some people just don't get those things. On the other hand, should one of her handlers alerted her to that possibility. Just boggles my mind.

3. And then we turn around and what does Gov. Perry do?
The same exact thing and he or his handlers could not have missed the ridicule of Bachmann.

So 2 potential presidential candidates make the same unfortunate gaffe? Three if you count Bachmann's hubby.

Could anyone be that dense?

17. Yeah. Look at their track records:
Michelle Bachman - that's a given.

Michelle Bachmann's husband - "pray away the gay"

Rick W. Perry - nearly failed a course in "Principles of Economics"

nuff said.

10. You are missing the picture.
ANd I don't mean the corn dog.

She has a history of setting up situation where she can play the poor little old me victim card. And she's doing it here again with the double bonus of getting the baggers in a lather.

She excels on dog whistles of all kinds. Do NOT underestimate this woman. She is a lot sharper than her public persona alludes to. She has won some highly contested elections. In truth, her political arch is very similar to our current presidents.

12. "Dog Whistles" - thank you. That is EXACTLY it.
MB is calculating, and while she may have missed the mark here somewhat, she knew exactly what she was doing on some level.

20. Anytime. I'm there for you.
And she's my rep (shudder) and I've assisted in several campaigns against her. She is cagy and not to be underestimated. The woman should be taken very seriously as the serious threat to liberty that she is.

23. Well if someone sets herself up to be a victim...
doesn't it behoove us all NOT to take the bait so she doesn't get what she wants?

One would think that's the smart thing to do.

But no. People don't think and they get sucked into the game, if there is one.

So if Ms Bachmann had this planned out to make herself look like a victim, then Democrats who joked and made dirty comments gave her exactly what she wanted.

Nice going, guys...

25. It's one of her main MO's.
She loves the victim card and the baggers and other evangelical nutbars eat it up while bopping the bacon and flogging themselves for the sin of bacon bopping.

4. Have you ever had a corn dog at the Iowa State Fair?
I have and they are awesome! The sexually oppressed prudes can play all the childish games they want.

8. Most people have eaten a corndog, at one time or another BUT
Edited on Tue Aug-16-11 12:36 PM by SoCalDem
"most" people are not running for president, and do not have every camera or cell phone trained on them while they are within view.

Families/friends love to take embarrassing pics, but most of them do NOT upload those pics of Mom/Dad/Sis/etc to the web to further embarrass them. (although they used to send tapes in to America's Most Funny Videos, if they thought they could get some money out of it)

Eating in public is often a potential problem:

the big juicy hamburger & fries is criticized, if the person has ever said a word about healthy eating

steaks & ribs are often critiqued by animal rights activists, or people who compare this to lack of food for less fortunate

hotdogs, corndogs, sausages, ice cream cones etc , for the obvious reason

even "safe foods" like salads end up being criticized, as in "arugula-eating tree-hugger, etc".

We all eat food, and some of it looks odd when we eat it, no matter how hard we try to be inconspicuous about it..That's why we should all be thankful that we mostly eat with family/friends.

People who ASK for the limelight should be aware that everything they do will be recorded/photographed..

Perhaps a corndog eaten in the bus, and a dish of ice cream (with a spoon) in public would be the best choice:)

14. It's an Iowa State Fair corndog!!!
Perhaps the greatest junk food in the world. It doesn't matter what I'm running for, the hell with the childish antics of the immature, I am eating as many as I can, where I can.
The Beavis and Buttheads of the world do not concern me in the least.

16. I don't really enjoy hot dogs to begin with (they repeat on me), so dipping
them in a cornbread batter and frying them is not my cup of tea.

Sorry.

5. shouldnt we have higher expectation out of the citizens, then demand no stick food at a fair?
the stick food is what the fair is about.

yet you want to point the finger at politicians photo op, and not the immature, uncivilized people?

I've done the same to Chris Matthews.

7. Exactly.
All presidential candidates should refrain from eating or performing any normal human functions in public. While at a state, county or any type of fair, they should hide in a private place (not a restroom!!) to eat. If they need to relieve themselves, they should invest in Depends so they don't get caught with their pants down.

Seriously? There are a million things we could attack this woman for. Eating a corndog shouldn't be one of them.

21. Remember this pic of Kerry?

I wasn't laughing or thinking it funny at the time of the 2004 election cycle. And I also thought it was not pertinent to the issues.

Both sides do this shit, and it is really really stupid.

24. i agree. i thought it stupid when people made a deal out of that. i think it says something
that a mere image could influence shit. i think it is pathetic that dukaukus was lambasted by his picture.

i think it is all so shallow and juvenile.

26. I actually thought the picture was a bit funny. But unlike Bachmann's, Kerry was
actually making a point that he supported and understood high technology (I think that was what it was).

See, look at her! She eats a corn dog just like everyone else!

Look! President Obama is pounding a PBR!

Look! Mitch Daniels is eating corn on the cob!

None of these people would be eating/drinking that stuff if there weren't cameras around.
