People are not happy unless they are knocking Homosexuals.
Edited on Tue Aug-16-11 10:32 AM by William769
At the top of the forum no less.

"Then, Rick
rolled over
in the bed
and said,
"Wow, Mitt,
you're hot."

Constantly trying to connect these two to Homosexuality is not only degrading to homosexuals, it's offensive. But I'm sure the person who put that up there already knew that.

13. I had the same reaction to that sticky.
I think there's a double standard going on. Some people seem to think that it's OK to imply that Republicans are gay if it serves some purpose. That seems to be especially true if that Republican is running for office and uses anti-GLBT rhetoric. I disagree with that, even when humor is attempted. Attaching the "gay" label to anything or person if you're trying to reflect negatively on that thing or person is just plain wrong, in my opinion. There should be no double-standard for this.

Edited on Tue Aug-16-11 10:54 AM by Aerows
and I didn't say anything, but as a lesbian who has more than contended with people who openly make anti-gay remarks, just because I am a femme lesbian, it always hurts.

I got so mad at myself in my early 20's, because I am a petite blond and men hit on me, but women never looked my way, and that was who I was yearning for. I endured listening to gay slurs from family members and "friends" and colleges.

I don't think some people realize the offense some people cause homosexuals. They think of gay people as the out, proud flaming variety, and miss the fact that many of us are right there among them, and while not in the closet, as acquaintances don't make it obvious.

It's painful to be a seemingly "straight" person that doesn't follow the paradigm of "outness" that the current cultural attitude of the gay community follows. I've gotten much better, now, but it still stuns me when a man out of the blue in this horribly conservative area hits on me when I am (in my mind) so out to everyone.

Along with the guys, I had quite a few women hit on me in my 20s and 30s, and I'm straight. Not that it upset me or anything. I just could never figure out what about me was attractive to them...

Edited on Tue Aug-16-11 12:22 PM by Aerows
While I was sitting there, lesbian as a sunrise, and I got a bunch of equally straight guys hitting on me. That's kind of a fascinating interplay, isn't it?

On another note, however, if you were that good looking to gay women, I was probably one of the ones subtly (or so I thought) hitting on you.

So I would hope that everyone forgives you.

And for the record, I did make fun of Michelle Bachmann eating the corn dog, along with Marcus Bachmann and Rick Santorum eating the frothy chocolate ice cream cone.

I'm a lot worse than you are in that context. I can't help but pick at the anti-gay or "pray the gay away" crowd.

You could not be further from the truth. Right now I have a post in ATA waiting to be answered about this subject, also in that thread I went after the picture that was posted about Marcus Bachmann.

Here is the sweet cheeks thread. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x9758359#9758360

Edited on Tue Aug-16-11 12:18 PM by Aerows
When people can admit that they were wrong, and grow stronger for it. This makes me respect you more than I already did, Seabeyond.

We grow when we admit that we need to grow.

Plants grow better when certain branches get pruned and they thrive in the sun.

Our community will thrive as we as individuals do the hard work of pruning ignorant ideas from our minds.

Make no mistake, I have plenty of ignorant ideas that need to be pruned, but it takes a thoughtful community to pry them out.

34. I'm gay
Edited on Tue Aug-16-11 11:42 AM by Aerows
And I'm a woman. The day that you as a woman not only endure sexist treatment, but threats of bodily harm because you are a woman with another woman, you get the opportunity to scream sexism at me.

Have you ever been threatened to a beating because of who you are walking down the street, holding hands with? If not - and I am a huge advocate for women's rights - you don't really understand what lesbians and gays endure.

I'm a femme lesbian. I'm 5'3", and weigh 110 wearing weights and soaking wet. Do you think I shouldn't be allowed to hold my lovers hand as I walk down the street without 6 foot tall animals harassing me? I can't take on a 6 foot tall burly dude at my size. It's no different that enacting rape laws.

With regard to Michele Bachmann, she brought that upon herself. She got photographed in an unflattering moment. Maybe she WANTED to get photographed in such an unflattering pose - I don't know. What I do know is that comparing that to open ridicule of homosexuals is way off the mark.

really?

the difference being, is you will find me consistantly calling out sexism against women as well as homophobia against gays without hypocrisy or selective sexism or homophobia.

and the violence against? is it only violence against me as a woman if i am gay? or how about violence just being a woman?

as women, are we really going to divide us in such a manner?

41. You aren't allowed
to scream that a situation is just like homophobia when you've never experienced it yourself, and simultaneously equate it with sexism. I've seen too many situations where homophobia resulted in physical harm for the homosexual in question. I want to protect them, and protect myself.

Seabeyond, you and I have had a lot of differences of opinion, but we also agree on a lot of things, too. Please do me a favor and stop putting words in my mouth like "it's only violence against me if I'm a gay woman". That isn't it.

I haven't had the easiest road with people accepting who I am, and I'm sure that shades the way I come across at times. I do respect you and your opinion, but honestly, I don't share your opinion, and I'm not going to pretend I do.

45. firstly.... scream? i am screaming? or are you just giving me nonsense
to create me as hysterical or out of control. manipulative in language? and secondly, "not allowed"? i am not allowed to speak out because i am not gay? am i not allowed to stand up and defend/protect gays either? am i not allowed to fight for gay right, either? i have seen violence on women in general, simply cause they are women.

aerows, these are the areas that we dont particularly get along. and yes, there are areas we do. but the words you chose matter, and i will always call them out. doesnt mean i respect you less. does not mean that i am even bothering to change you mind. it means, i am challenging the words you use.

i see the gay battle right along the side of the women battle. i won't seperate them. they are too intertwined.

i understand you have people that dont accept you. i am not one of them. and i wont be battlin against you, regardless.

even in disagreement.

46. I made some typos in my last post
I'm a woman and have battled against the "hysterical woman" stereotype all of my life, and I still do. The fact that I realized I was attracted to women made it icing on the cake for the social circle I was born into.

Shoot me a PM. I honestly think you and I have some things that we could talk about and get out that would benefit both of us. Sometimes we think being female makes us weak, other times we are sure it makes us strong. Sometimes we need to figure out where we are in that spectrum.

In peace,

Aerows
