Dean - You can't "cut the daylights out of social security and expect Democrats" to support you!
He was great on the Rachel Maddow Show, and said that we're in a really good place for next year's election with Perry being the weakest governor in the nation (the Lt Gov submits the budget), and that he has only created gov't jobs not what he's been bragging about, and that Romney and Bachmann's actions have harmed job growth, and that the president needs to stick to defending the programs like Medicare/SS and Democrats will do well. I couldn't agree more, Gov. Dean!

5. Fortunately, Obama's commission only voted for a 22% cut in benefits
for the average recipient over time. Actually less than $55,000 in lifetime benefits per recipient.

So Dean should be on board.

22. there are thousands of links to the text of the debt deal
They all show absolutely zero cuts to SS.

Proof is in the pudding, not the rhetoric.

There were no SS cuts. There are none in the triggers either.

This President has yet to sign a single SS cut.

You can read the text of the debt deal as easily as I can. You are the one that made the extraordinary claim that Obama cut SS by 22%. It is incumbent on YOU to provide a link proving that SS was cut.

54. STRAWMAN alert
Think we wouldn't notice how you tried to change the topic? He never stated Obama cut SS 22%, he said the president's committe (aka catfood commission) recommended cutting SSI 22%. the only reason Obama hasn't already signed an SSI cuts bill is there is no bill like that - YET. He, personally, his suggestion was that SSI cuts be included in the debt ceiling increase. Luckily, the Repugs are so stupid that they rejected their own plan only because it didn't totally end SSI, which is their goal.

Obama has been and still is the upfront and most fervent supporter of cuts to SSI. He says he supports strenghtening the program, but that's bogus and the same lie that's spouted by Repugs.

Is that an average?

It should be worked out so that the people on the higher end get the cuts more than the poor.

Fifty five thousand dollars worth of cuts to a poor senior wouold be life threatening.

But then, why the hell are we even talking about cutting Social Security?

I was reading over the weekend that Obama gave over 150 billons of dollars to the nuke warhead industry so he would feel comfortable negotiationg with the Republicans regarding the SALT TREATY meetings that he held last fall!!

This is a very rich nation. We should tax the damn rich, quit supporting the war industry and the wars, and friggin tax the rich.

11. It has been cut. Just called something else.
http://journals.democraticunderground.com/madfloridian/7793

"Make no mistake: This is a bipartisan effort. It started back in December, when President Obama capitulated to the GOP on a budget deal by cutting the payroll tax, which funds Social Security. Advocates for the program pointed out then the shortcomings of this approach: It was targeted inefficiently and unfairly, skewing to the upper middle class and hurting lower-income families in comparison with the Making Work Pay tax credit it replaced.

Even more troubling, it blew a hole in the financing mechanism for Social Security by reducing payroll tax revenue by roughly $110 billion for the year. It was plain then, as it is now, that once you've cut a tax, it's ever harder to restore it.

..."We were assured that the payroll tax cut negotiated in December would be a one-time, temporary step. No danger that Social Security could be permanently impaired, or so the assurances came. It's now six months later. More economic stimulus is obviously needed, and the payroll tax is on the table again. (Surprise!)

This time the talk is of extending the one-time-only cut for workers, whose FICA deductions dropped to 4.2% from 6.2% of covered pay, and throwing in a similar break for employers, who also pay 6.2% of covered payroll. The talk comes against the backdrop of a signal from the big retirement lobby group AARP that it would accept certain changes in Social Security, including benefit cuts. (AARP backed off, but only a bit, when its policy shift was divulged publicly Friday.)"

alternative is the bat-shit crazy lunacy of the GOP. I cannot believe they are much further to the right of even Reagan. Scary times in our good ol' US of A. I know who I'll vote for, but we have to get this president a blue House again, so that positive things get through again, like Cash for Clunkers and rebates for buying green appliances. Those two things created work for corporations in selling tens of thousands of expensive items, and to replenish their stock, surprise surprise, the GOP House has put an end to all good bills. I hope America wakes up in 2012 and gets the teahadists out of the House, or we're truthfully screwed as a nation.

25. The "temporary" Payroll Tax "Holiday" is a serious threat to SS/Medicare.
In addition to trivializing the Payroll Tax as something that you can call a Fun Holiday on, like a Snowday (Holiday) from School,
it ALSO directly connects Social Security Funding to The Deficit,
legitimizing Republican claims that SS is causing our problems.

Payroll Tax Holiday Directly Connects SS to The Deficit

Any REAL Democrat would be preaching that we NEED to Increase the Payroll Tax (Raise the Cap),
NOT calling for more "Holidays".
