A quirk of state election law allows candidates to receive unlimited sums during recounts. Prosser took full advantage, according to a review of campaign finance records by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
He collected $272,887 for his recall efforts, including three $50,000 donations and two $25,000 donations. Kloppenburg, meanwhile, raised a total of $126,789, of which $10,000 came from her mother-in-law and no other donation exceeded $2,500.
Prosser's donors included John Templeton Jr. of Pennsylvania and his wife, Josephine, who each gave his recount fund $50,000. John Templeton Jr. heads the conservative John Templeton Foundation, which had $1.7 billion in assets at the end of 2009.
