Bachmann: "Submissive" doesn't mean subservient.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/08/14/ftn/main20092175.shtml

Asked about the comment by CBS News' Norah O'Donnell Sunday, Bachmann reaffirmed that to her, "submission means respect, mutual respect."

"I respect my husband, he respects me," she said. "We have been married 33 years, we have a great marriage...and respecting each other, listening to each other is what that means."

"Do you think submissive means subservient?" O'Donnell asked.

"Not to us," Bachmann said. "To us it means respect. We respect each other, we listen to each other, we love each other and that is what it means."

I know that Republicans think that you can just assign meaning to words like: WMD, Decider, Refudiate, but according to Webster's Online:
http://www.webster-dictionary.net/definition/Submissive

Not at his feet submissive in distress,
Creature so fair his reconcilement seeking.
- Milton.
2. Showing a readiness to submit; expressing submission; as, a submissive demeanor.
With a submissive step I hasted down.

1. I blame religion....
anybody who can deal with the paradoxes involved in believing revealed religious doctrine has no problem with that kind of Orwellian doublespeak.

3. More over, it is the meaning in the Bible passage she was quoting that matters
so she is either not following the word of God or is subverting the word of God for political gain, or both.

Her fundie followers should love that.

4. So, again, Bachmann Failure Overdrive strikes out.
First it was the Founding Fathers, now she has no idea what the word submissive means...or maybe she really DOES. Here is a more disturbing question - can you really trust a person that has decided their reality is more important then our reality? What kind of POTUS would that make (GWB)? The word submissive means what it does for a reason, Bachmann letting us all know her rules come first should instantly dismiss her as a serious candidate for POTUS and call into question her ability to be in Congress.

5. Submissive vs. Dominant
I'm a bit confused. Is the submissive the one with the rubber ball in the mouth and the shackles? Or is it the one with the whips and the high heels? Not that there is anything wrong with that...

6. Good point, however, those verses are there for all the men
and women who claim that their reason for opposing marriage equality is another verse by the same man. So it is not just Bachmann that should answer this sort of question. And submissive is not the only thing Paul commands of women, either. From my point of view, when anyone mounts the podium to announce that their Christian religion demands that they oppose marriage equality, they need to answer for the rest of the verses as well. Paul says women must never wear any costly array nor clothing meant to draw attention to their beauty. Mrs Obama says that Paul is the Word of God for me. Just not for her. Because the gay parts are true, but the parts about slavery and women are dated old traditions, plus she likes expensive things, so fuck Paul, and she's not gay, so fuck you.
Folks chant that they 'believe the Bible' but they don't, they would be offended if they were asked to. And it is NOT just the Republicans, it is the Politicians who Use Religion.
They are all hypocrites of the worst sort.

7. A distinction without a difference:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distinction_without_a_difference

A distinction without a difference is a type of argument where one word or phrase is preferred to another, but results in no difference to the argument as a whole. It is particularly used when a word or phrase has connotations associated with it that one party to an argument prefers to avoid.

8. So does that mean that Marcus also submits to her? And if he does,
how does that fit with the biblical admonishment that wives be submissive to their husbands? And if he doesn't, then does that mean he has no respect for her?

Either way, her ridiculous claim about the meaning of "submissive" puts them in an untenable position.

12. Thanks, that's EXACTLY what occurred to me.
Of course, it's too much to hope that any MSM functionary would pose such a question.

11. So if Bachmann says "submissive" means "mutual respect", she MUST BE
a feminist! Or she has a hard time with synonyms.
