For Conservative Troglodytes Who Might Visit DU...
You are much like the chained prisoners in Plato's Cave. Chained into immobility, you see only what those above and behind you wish you to see. They march behind and above you in front of the great fire, carrying their shadow-making objects. You do not see the ones doing the carrying. You see only the shadows they wish you to see. It is your reality. You cannot see that you are held prisoner to their whims. If they wish you to see something, they will show it to you, and you will not know any other thing.

Those who hold you and limit your knowledge do not have your best interests at heart. If they did, you would not be chained and immobile. If you were not chained and immobile and able to see what is and not just the two-dimensional illusion presented to you, you might well realize your situation and learn. That is not the plan. What you see is not what it seems.

1. Kicked and recommended with one caveat.
That we don't fall into the same trap.

Thanks for the thread, MineralMan:thumbsup:

3. Most of us can stand up and look behind us and see the pathway that
leads out of the cave. Still, some might find the chained existence more soothing, I suppose.

2. hmm
You may very well be right, but isn't that what the right says about the left, too?

And be honest, who DOESN'T love shadow puppetry? :)

4. I don't believe I've seen the analogy applied to the left.
Perhaps it has been done. If you find such a thing, let me know.

12. My bad
Don't mind me, I was just being facetious.

_______
*If a person ever explains, "I'm being facetious," after they make a statement, don't bother looking the word up in the dictionary because all it means is that that person is being a sarcastic ass. They're also showing you they know big words.

5. Their puny attempts at government paralysis have been thwarted by persistant gridlock
The fools!

Thank goodness we're different. At least we have change we can believe in.

6. Change doesn't come from the place you think it does, necessarily.

It also doesn't look like you think it looks, perhaps. Do you believe you see things as they are? Perhaps you do. Perhaps the cave has multiple levels. I couldn't say.

13. It is a choice few make, certainly.
The results can be difficult to interpret.

7. Indeed. But I must ask where did that drawing in your post come from?
I am having a touch of deja vu here and feel as though I have seen it somewhere before. But I can't remember where.

Google Images. There are many illustrations of Plato's Cave. This one was the simplest and easiest to take in quickly. Here's another:

a different subject. However, I did not see the film to which you refer, so I wouldn't be able to tell you anything about it. I think they discuss movies over in the Entertainment forum. You might try asking there.

18. just as I suspected, completely in the dark
"I'm telling you. People come and go in this Forest, and they say 'It's only Eeyore, so it doesn't count.' They walk to and fro saying 'Ha ha!' But do they know anything about A? They don't. It's just three sticks to them. But to the Educated - mark this, little Piglet - to the Educated, not meaning Poohs and Piglets, it's a great and glorious A. Not," he added, "just something that anybody can come and breathe on." House at Pooh Corner p. 88

Yes, your thread is about how a certain group of Americans is kept in the dark by propaganda, shown only what some dark and mysterious masters of the universe want them to see. That sorta implies that you know more, you see more.

Yet, they are told, in their corner of the universe - Sharkland, about things like "the fast and the furious". Something, you seem to know nothing about, because (in their eyes) you are only shown what Soros/Obama/Olbermann/Maddow want you to see, or you only look at the things you want to see. Meanwhile ignoring the corruption in your own Democratic politicians, such as http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-atf-guns-20110811,0,7349292.story

And you also did not answer my question, seeming to not know about the continued bloated growth of Government Spending http://www.politifact.com/coburn/original/

My point being, they also think they know things and are seeing things that you do not know or do not choose to see.

17. Ahhh, Plato, the original nihilist.
The neo-cons loves them some Plato's _Republic_. A bit gnostic and anti-created-world for my taste.
