28 years for judge who sold juveniles to a for-profit detention center
Former Judge Mark A. Ciavarella Jr. has been sentenced to 28 years in prison on charges stemming from the Luzerne County corruption scandal. He will be taken into custody.

U.S. District Judge Edwin M. Kosik issued the sentence after an hour-long hearing where Ciavarella defended himself against the stigma that he sold juveniles to a for-profit detention center in exchange for a share of $2.8 million in payoffs.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Gordon Zubrod rejected those arguments.

"Mr. Ciavarella's argument seems to be that he was not selling kids retail," Zubrod said. "We agree with that. He was selling them wholesale."

Some judges have a more internecine connection to the money flowing
into and out of the prison industry.

"Unethical"? Didn't believe his actions to be "illegal"?

13. We mustn't forget the teen victimized by the judge who later committed suicide.
Then the entire wretched story rolled out. The mom was Sandy Fonzo. Her son took his own life after that man, Judge Mark Ciavarella, had sentenced Fonzo's 17-year-old son, Edward Kenzakowski, to six months in a Pennsylvania detention center for possession of drug paraphernalia.

The sentence seemed excessive to everyone because, according to Kenzakowski's mother, it was his first offense. And usually in such cases, especially teenagers, it is presumed the judge will be lenient in his ruling. But Judge Ciavarella was anything but lenient. And Fonzo says her son never recovered from the ordeal and eventually took his own life.

As fate would have it, the feds in Pennsylvania became suspicious of similar rulings by Ciavarella and launched an investigation. Ciavarella was found guilty of accepting nearly $1 million in kickbacks for sending thousands of teens to a juvenile facility owned by some of his friends.

Hopefully, it's not after just a few years. This man needs to suffer. I hope the victims and their families sue him and the detention center for every penny they've got, on top of the prison sentence.

I'm late to this story so I wasn't aware of the kids for cash scandal. Here's a wiki link for anyone else who hasn't heard about this insanity: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kids_for_cash_scandal

I imagine life is going to be pretty rough for a judge in prison. Can't say I feel even an ounce of sympathy for this sick bastard.

I cannot find a link about him receiving the transplants from a prisoner, but do distinctly remember it from then. I was living in AL and even people there were saying, "Huh, wha?". All I can find are claims organs were from "gang member violence".

81. evil little shit
this is one of the crimes that should carry life in prison. I am not a big fan of imprisoning people, it's almost a throw them away for life or don't put them in prison at all situation for me. And this is surely a lock him away situation

That's what this is. Tea Baggers should take a good look at what happens when all you care about is profit and not people.

90. This kind of corruption is the potential outcome of a
privatized justice system. If this is the way this country chooses to go, we'll have more of this to look forward to. When profit is involved, greed becomes the ultimate motivator, and those entrusted with power will be too tempted.
