Pennsylvania American Water says a six-inch cast iron pipe burst on Cedar Boulevard.

Authorities said that it could take crews up to eight hours to repair the pipe.

The water company provided bottled water to everyone who lost service.

1. Un-named dog bites un-named man in un-named town
Edited on Tue Aug-09-11 10:51 AM by SpiralHawk
Authorities, who spoke only on condition of anonymity, noted that the town is relatively "less pleasant" as a consequence.

8. About cast iron pipe -
Cast iron pipe is a historical pipe which found widespread use as a pressure pipe for transmission of water, gas and sewage, and as a water drainage pipe, during the 19th and 20th centuries. It comprises predominantly a gray cast iron tube and was frequently used uncoated, although later developments did result in various coatings and linings to reduce corrosion and improve hydraulics. Cast iron pipe was gradually superseded by ductile iron pipe, which is a direct development, with most existing manufacturing plants transitioning to the new material during the 1970s and 1980s. There is currently almost no new manufacture of cast iron pipe.

This is a symptom of deteriorating infrastructure. Not as dramatic as a bridge collapse, but ultimately more expensive and dangerous. Lots of leaking sewer pipes next to leaking water pipes these days.
