Horn bill meant to ban use of tax-funded school resources to lobby legislators unfair to schools, opponents say
SAGINAW — When Saginaw Township Community Schools sent home a letter to parents through students about potential funding cuts to schools in Michigan, state Rep. Kenneth B. Horn did more than take note.
He introduced legislation to prevent school districts or their employees from using tax-funded school supplies, equipment, vehicles or school time to lobby or become involved in political activities. He said he wants the same restrictions nonprofits face imposed on school districts and their employees.
Saginaw Township was far from the only district to reach out to Horn, R-Frankenmuth. He said he received hundreds of emails, faxes, student-signed petitions and phone calls from around the state to his Lansing office when lawmakers debated if and how much to cut school funding.
“There’s countless stories of public resources being used to lobby in Lansing,” Horn said.
