2. It's an enormous area for this kind of violence. It doesn't seem to be a protest so much as....
...a social breakdown on an unthinkable level for such a major city.

4. About 20 minutes ago there was a stream from the Beeb that was working and they reported that....
...some residents in affected areas were reduced to standing outside their own homes (some of which resided above the shops which were being set on fire) with pots and pans in an attempt to fend off attackers who might try to attack their area next.

That's a very telling and very sad state for Londoners to be in. I visited London stayed in Greenwich for a about a month, quite a while back. It's very beautiful and the people there are hardy. To imagine Londoners reduced to this kind of self-defense is very troubling. These people had to ship their children off to the countryside during WW II and put up with the blitz where you never knew which block was going to be hit, who would be killed next.

If you haven't seen it yet, you might which to view this video taken some time last night, I believe: London Riots - Police have to back it up in Woolwich

IMO, the commentator says it all. "Bloody fucking hell...are you kidding me? Un-fucking real."

6. Here from the live blog at the BBC site
0757: More from that Radio 5 Live interview with Claudia Webbe, who chairs the independent advisory group for Operation Trident, which investigates black-on-black crime: "Instead of seeing those young people who are disenfranchised, disaffected, disengaged - instead of seeing them turn inwards, what you've now got, I'm seeing, is young people exploding right across London. This is young people in a sense operating on the edge of society are quite prepared to explode because they don't see a society that necessarily cares about them."

You are onto something

7. Oh and earlier in the blog
0720: Theresa May Home Secretary "These were the worst scenes of violence on our streets for many years. It is completely unacceptable."Many brave police officers who put themselves in harm's way in order to protect the public and property. We need to bring an end to this soon." The home secretary rules out bringing in the Army: "The way we police in the UK is by consent."

I might add, for now, If this continues they WILL bring in the army...

Oh and from the footage, it is youth of all color.

12. There are some other things May ought to find unacceptable

Theresa May: We can cut police budget without risking violent unrest

Home secretary calls for rational debate over spending cuts and rejects police prediction of a 'Christmas for criminals'

The home secretary, Theresa May, has dismissed fears that deep spending cuts could undermine the ability of the police to tackle possible civil unrest, and insisted the British did not respond to austerity by rioting on the streets.

May told the police superintendents' annual conference that it was "ridiculous" to suggest savings could not be made in policing, and went on to challenge the political orthodoxy that fewer officers would inevitably mean more crime. . . .

May told the police: "The British public don't simply resort to violent unrest in the face of challenging economic circumstances. We must have a rational and reasonable debate about policing. Your association has a long and proud history of constructive and sensible contributions to policing policy-making – long may it continue."
