The political situation for 2012, based on the way things look today.
1. Things improve economically.

a. GOP nominates sane, boring white guy (Romney, Jeb) - Obama wins comfortably.

b. GOP nominates nutcase (Bachmann, Santorum, etc.) - Obama wins in landslide.

2. Things stay pretty much like they are now - lousy, but not the worst imaginable.

a. GOP nominates sane, boring white guy (Romney, Jeb) - close election, we may be in trouble.

b. GOP nominates nutcase (Bachmann, Santorum, etc.) - Obama wins comfortably.

3. Economy goes in the tank.

a. GOP nominates sane, boring white guy (Romney, Jeb) - hello prez Romney or Bush.

b. GOP nominates nutcase (Bachmann, Santorum, etc.) - Pray.

2. Do you know why Republicans are desparate to tank the economy?
If you say it's because it is their only chance of winning you are correct. The problem is that won't work either because they are gleefully trying to yank the safety net out from under people even as they are desperately trying to tank the economy. That tactic might not cost them the southern vote, but it sure isn't going to win them any votes in the sane states.
