ABC-New & amazing things every day at Fukushima-“Deadly Easter eggs” 10 full sieverts/hr + much more

Deadly areas of radiation found at Fukushima nuclear plant, WJLA ABC 7 by John Metcalfe, August 2, 2011:

Remember the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant? That place is still so contaminated that scientists are uncovering new and amazing things every day in unexplored locations. <...>

The deadly Easter eggs, located near a ventilation stack, are generating radiation on the magnitude of 10 sieverts per hour. Actually, the levels are higher than that, but the dosimeters the Japanese are using stop at 10. <...>

The Japanese nuclear team observed these fizzing pockets from afar with a gamma camera <...>

More high radiation spots found / Levels of 5 and 10 sieverts detected near pipe at No. 1 nuclear reactor

Extremely high levels of radiation have been detected at two more locations near a pipe at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, Tokyo Electric Power Co said. The revelation was made Tuesday, a day after 10 sieverts (10,000 millisieverts) per hour was detected on the pipe, the highest radiation level recorded at the plant.

Full-body exposure to 10 sieverts of radiation is almost certainly lethal to humans.

According to Tuesday's announcement, radiation levels in excess of 10 sieverts and 5 sieverts per hour were detected near the pipe connected to the containment vessel of the No. 1 reactor.

Radioactive materials are believed to have accumulated on the pipe after being released when the No. 1 reactor's vents were opened in the wake of a meltdown at the facility in March. The vents are still releasing radiation, TEPCO believes. About 2 grams of radioactive cesium releases radiation of 10 sieverts per hour.

The second location, from which radiation at 10 sieverts per hour is being released, was detected through an image taken by a gamma camera Sunday. The site was 10 meters above ground and close to where the first record-high level of radiation was detected.

“Gleeful Vultures”? England’s Sellafield plutonium (MOX) facility to close because of Fukushima — 50% of fuel was for TEPCO

The Mox nuclear fuel plant at Sellafield will be closed on Wednesday afternoon <...> as a consequence of the Fukushima incident <...>
Tony Fountain, chief executive of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority:

“The reason for this is directly related to the tragic events in Japan <...>“
He admitted that the plant had suffered “many years of disappointing performance” that has been funded by the taxpayer. He said the key to attempts to save the plant in recent years had been the commitment of Japanese utilities to reusing nuclear fuel, and their support for the UK as a “centre of excellence”. But with the crisis in the Japanese nuclear industry, that route is no longer viable.
“Tepco destined to take 50% of the plant output and they as owner of the Fukushima plants are clearly facing the most extreme challenges.”
Local MP, Jamie Reed of Labour:

“It is now absolutely essential that the new Mox plant is brought forward as quickly as possible. The market for Mox fuel exists and is growing, our plutonium disposition strategy relies upon such a facility and the industry requires it.”
He warned that “gleeful vultures” would seize upon the decision to close the plant and argue against the “critical national need for new Mox plant”.

Experts: Melt-through scenario means even higher radiation readings to come — Likely many more reports of deadly radiation in future

Tokyo Electric Power Co. reported its second deadly radiation reading in as many days at its wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant <...>

“It’s probably the first of many more to come,” said Michael Friedlander, who spent 13 years operating nuclear power plants <...>

“If nuclear fuels melted through containment chambers, Tepco will find even higher radiation readings after water in building basements is removed,” said Tetsuo Ito, the head of the Atomic Energy Research Institute at Kinki University. <...>

Tokyo U. nuke expert: Radioactive substances may have “poured” into pipe during explosion — Levels could also be extremely high outside Reactors No. 3 and 4

<...> “As well as radiation spilling out when the vents were opened, we can’t rule out that radioactive substances poured into the pipe during the hydrogen explosion” that damaged the reactor on March 12, said.

“Radiation levels also could be high in the exhaust stacks of the Nos. 3 and 4 reactors. This should be closely checked to ensure the safety of workers at the plant,” he said. <...>

Asahi: Latest detection of such high radiation levels is evidence that radioactive material spewed from Fukushima at much higher levels than previously believed

<...> The fact that such high levels of radiation were detected near piping connected to the outer atmosphere is further evidence that radioactive materials have spewed from the crippled reactors at much higher levels than previously believed. <...>

Because that level of radiation was detected on the outside of the piping, the level inside the piping could be even higher. <...>

TEPCO officials had assumed that high levels of radiation would mainly be detected within the reactor buildings containing the cores where the meltdowns occurred. <...>

Radioactive fish found in Connecticut River — State officials trying to determine source of Strontium-90

Vermont finds contaminated fish as nuclear debate rages, Reuters:

Vermont health regulators said on Tuesday they found a fish containing radioactive material in the Connecticut River near Entergy’s (ETR.N) Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant which could be another setback for Entergy to keep it running.

The state said it needs to do more testing to determine the source of the Strontium-90, which can cause bone cancer and leukemia. <...>

Depression, alcoholism take toll on lonely evacuees in disaster areas

IWAKI, Fukushima Prefecture--An 86-year-old woman knows she has little chance of returning to the home where she had lived for more than 30 years.

She left her home in Hirono after the town became part of the voluntary evacuation zone about 25 kilometers from the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.

Now feeling alone and helpless after evacuating to a hotel in Iwaki in the prefecture, the woman, whose husband died five years ago, takes prescribed sleeping pills every night just to fall asleep.

The drugs aren't working; she says that she still wakes up every hour.

At least once during the daytime, she says she thinks about killing herself.

"Perhaps I had better die," the woman muttered. "But I want to die in Hirono."

Tepco: Ultra-high radiation levels may be from melted fuel that leaked out of containment vessel (PHOTO)

<...> Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Tuesday radiation exceeded 10 sieverts at two locations near a duct connected to a ventilation stack between two reactor units at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant. <...>

TEPCO said melted fuel in the No. 1 reactor might have collected inside the duct after leaking from the containment vessel during venting early in the crisis. <...>

<...> The ultra-high levels of radiation were measured Monday afternoon on the grounds of the facility, near reactors 1 and 2, said spokesman Naoki Tsunoda. The lethal radiation was measured at the bottom of a ventilation tower <...>

“I am shaking with anger” says head of University of Tokyo’s Radioisotope Center before testimony about internal radiation (VIDEO)

Professor Tatsuhiko Kodama, head of the Radioisotope Center at the University of Tokyo testifying in Japan’s Lower House committee

So, using our knowledge base at the Radioisotope Center, we calculated. Based on the thermal output, it is 29.6 times the amount released by the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima. In uranium equivalent, it is 20 Hiroshima bombs.

What is more frightening is that whereas the radiation from a nuclear bomb will decrease to one-thousandth in one year, the radiation from a nuclear power plant will only decrease to one-tenth.

In other words, we should recognize from the start that just like Chernobyl, Fukushima I Nuke Plant has released radioactive materials equivalent in the amount to tens of nuclear bombs, and the resulting contamination is far worse than the contamination by a nuclear bomb. <...>

As I said before, there was only one geiger counter in Minami Soma City when we went there in May. In fact, there were 20 personal survey meters provided by the US military. But no one at the city’s Board of Education could understand the English manual until we went there and told them how to use them. That’s how it is there.

As to the food inspection, there are more advanced survey meters than germanium counters, such as semiconductor detectors. Why doesn’t the Japanese government spend money in supporting (the development of these advanced detectors?)?

After 3 months, the government has done no such thing, and I am shaking with anger.” <...>

I have been in charge of antibody drugs at the Cabinet Office since Mr. Obuchi was the prime minister <1998->. We put radioisotopes to antibody drugs to treat cancer. In other words, my job is to inject radioisotopes into human bodies, so my utmost concern is the internal radiation exposure and that is what I have been studying intensely.

The biggest problem of internal radiation is cancer. How does cancer happen? Because radiation cuts DNA strands. <...>

Hundreds of tons of very highly radioactive water found in ANOTHER building at Fukushima plant

<...> Tokyo Electric Power Company said on Monday that it discovered about 700 tons of contaminated water on Saturday in the basement of an on-site building.

The utility said the water contained 19,000 becquerels of radioactive cesium 134 per cubic centimeter, and 22,000 becquerels of cesium 137 — both very high levels. <...>

The utility is investigating how the leakage happened but says it has already started the work to stop the contaminated water from leaking out of the building.

Former New Jersey Governor's Agree - New Nuclear Plant Likely in Future

The following exchange between former New Jersey governors Brendan T. Byrne and Tom Kean took place in a Tuesday teleconference.

Q: Hearings began this week on Gov. Christie’s new energy plan, which includes a nuclear component. Realistically, do you think New Jersey would accept a new nuclear plant?

GOV. BYRNE: Depends on where it’s located and how far away we are from the last scare. But the benefits to municipalities where a nuclear plant is located are very generous.

GOV. KEAN: I built the last nuclear plant — not only in the state, but in the country. It wasn’t easy politically, but Republicans and Democrats got together and acted for the future of the state. It’s almost impossible to rely totally on fossil fuels and, as of now, there are not enough alternatives. If we want efficient, cheap, non-polluting energy, we may have to accept a new plant.

Q: Might we have to compromise any of our environmental goals to ensure sufficient energy?

KEAN: No, and we shouldn’t, particularly if nuclear energy is part of the solution. It’s fossil fuels — primarily coal and oil — that we have to cut down on. We’re increasingly relying on gas and other new forms of energy, such as wind, solar and geothermal, but for the foreseeable future, they’re a small part of the solution.

BYRNE: I see more and more solar panels going up, which shows we’re trying to do something.

KEAN: Conservation, I believe, is going to be at least a quarter of the solution.

1. Everybody RELAX!
Nuclear Power Plants are Perfectly Safe!
They have been "engineered" to withstand Natural Disasters and Terrorist Attacks.
They all have redundant back up systems.

Did I mention that We know SCIENCE, and are WAY smarter than you,
so there is nothing for you to worry your pretty little heads about.

2. There you go again, Stockholmer, you sound just like
one of those Extreme Enviroweenie alarmists with their Biased Claptrap, reporting all of those news articles from out of this country. Sheesh.

"..Former New Jersey Governor's Agree..."

Can anyone use an apostrophe correctly anymore? :-)

I tease but I do get weary of it.

Carry on, regardless.

3. Oh wait, the China Syndrome is now for real?
GOODIE... eat your bananas you fool, you get more radiation from them! :sarcasm: for those that need them.

Thanks Stock...

I keep my eye on local readings, FINALLY got butter. They have been background long enough,
