'''Though it’s true that Obama has wanted cuts to entitlement programs for some time, he doesn’t get them in the first phase of the deal, and in the second phase, assuming the trigger mechanism kicks in, Social Security remains off-limits.''''

8. provide a quote of Obama saying he wants to cut entitlements.
Edited on Wed Aug-03-11 07:57 PM by Whisp
not what other people THINK he wants to do, or pretend to know what he is planning, right from Obama's lips. I don't ever recall him saying anything of the sort.

or maybe he's getting confused with the Cuts to Medicare Providers.

3. The statement you quoted is absolutely factual
There were no cuts at all to Social Security in the first part of the deal.

"assuming the trigger mechanism kicks in" means that the Joint Committee can't come to an agreement or get a bill passed in Congress, in which case, the enforcement that "kicks in" DOES, in fact exempt Social Security from any cuts whatsoever.

I didn't read the rest of the piece, but if that's what you're calling a lie, you're wrong, and Professor Robin is correct.

11. K & R - I started reading that earlier. It's long but definitely worth reading.
Even though the discussion basically boils down to a debate about whether Obama is just weak and a capitulator vs. whether he's been working for the other side all along, it's actually a lot more nuanced than that. It brings up other factors, such as the famous Beltway bubble or "village" mindset, that most of us know about but tend to forget in these polarized debates.
