Wow! The new Spiderman super hero is African American
Marvel Comics has announced that the new Spiderman in its historically successful Spiderman series will now be African American.

Spiderman is one of the most popular and successful American super heros of all time since the franchise began back in 1962.

The original Spider man was Peter Parker. For those of you who don't follow the latest in super hero comics, in the last comic book for the season Spiderman (Peter Parker) is killed by his archenemies the Green Goblin. Marvel Comics will be rolling out the new Spiderman who will be taking over for Peter Parker and (hopefully) avenging Parker's death at the hands of the Green Goblin.

The other characters in the Spiderman franchise will still be intact, including Aunt Mae, who will help the new young Spiderman slowly learn about what life is like with superpowers.

To be clear, this story is not a re-write, it is a part of the continuing series. Marvel Comics said they wanted Spiderman to reflect the more diverse culture and times we live in today.

Replacing Peter Parker will be a new character named Miles Morales, who will have have an interracial background being the product of an African American father and hispanic mother.

You can read the full story here:

And here:

The continuing story of one of American's legendary superheroes will continue with the new Spiderman next month.

1. One caveat. Peter Parker is only dead in the "Ultimate" universe
Which was set up as an alternate reality to the canonical Marvel Universe.

Not that I'm a huge comic geek...but I am totally a huge comic geek.

16. good, because my first thought was NOOOOOOOO! As a girl I loved the
cartoon & there were a series of made-for-tv-movies...in the late 70s early 80s? thereabouts. I'd read the comics with a boy neighbor.

3. Peter Parker is dead like Steve Rogers (Captain American) was dead.
The webbing won't dry before he's back.

4. It should be pointed out this is in the "Ultimates" universe -- sorta parallel to ours
In "our" world/universe/continuity, ol' Peter P. has joined the reconstituted Fantastic Four, in the wake of the Human Torch's death.

Whew! ;-)

6. Thanks guys for some of the clarifications.

I still think this is a positive move in the right direction. There is no reason why we can't have more minority, or women super heros saving the day for all of us!

19. We had Oracle. Our disabled DC superhero, but she's being "healed" or something
for the relaunch and returning to her previous role as Batgirl. I'll miss her.

Yes, because they are both black and powerful and commentators LOVE to use pop culture for phrases and stuff to sound relevant.

8. The Goblin killed Spidey?
A later version of the Goblin, or was the first movie not in line with the Marvel storyline?

11. Haha it's ok. It's the alternate reality version of the Green Goblin
Edited on Tue Aug-02-11 06:42 PM by DFab420
that got the alternate reality version of Spidey.

Also the movie wasn't totally in line with the canon. GG doesn't die in the Universe and is actually responsible for many of the tragedies that occur to Peter throughout the series.

12. Marvel has made a great effort to focus on diversity issues
The X-Men series in particular has really focused on discrimination issues, watch the X-Men movies if you have not seen them as there are lots of political undertones.

13. This is true. Even the original X-men from the 60's dealt with civil rights
Stan Lee said he wanted to create a group of people that spoke to a generation that was faced with unprecedented hate, so he made mutants, then made them heros.

22. Good thing Spidey's costume is non-revealing.
One inch of black skin showing, and J.Jonah Jameson will be branded a racist for his anti-Spiderman tirades.
