So what are the triggers?
specifically what is the trigger that gets the Super Committee recommending cuts to military and social safety nets?

1. My understanding is that the triggers are automatic
If the Super Congress fails to send out an un-amendable bill, then the cuts are triggered automatically. I am unaware, however, of any limitation on the Ordinary Congress to pass a bill that would (let's just say) exempt the defense budget from any cuts should the trigger be activated.

2. if they can't come up with the 1.2 trillion in cuts by whenever
I forget the date.

Actually, SS and Medicaid and some veteran benefit systems are exempt from cuts if the triggers are hit.

Medicare and defense spending would be affected by the triggers.

However, SS and Medicaid are NOT exempt from being part of the 1.2 trillion in cuts.

Therefore, the Republicans on the committee will make sure we don't hit the triggered cuts. That way, they can (try to) make cuts to SS/Medicare and avoid cuts to defense.

7. Heads GOP win, tails Dems lose?
Edited on Tue Aug-02-11 05:12 PM by BadgerKid
As you say, Republicans will come up with something less than 1.2T. That would seem to put the burden on the Dems on the committee to make up the difference (in order to spare SS).

I'm already dreading whatever talking points the Republicans gain from this. In an election year.

5. If they don't come up with 1.5T in cuts or Congress does not approve their recommendations
the cuts are automatic.
