If a Married Lesbian Couple Saves 40 Teens from the Norway Massacre and No One Writes About it, Did it Really Happen?

By this point, most of you have heard about the tragedy in Norway a few weeks ago when a Christian Fundamentalist* murdered 77** people and injured another 96. The story has been well-covered by International media and the mainstream press here in the US.

What you probably have not heard about is the married lesbian couple who rescued 40 teenagers during and after the bloody event. Several blogs and gay and lesbian publications are now picking up the story, but the heavy hitters who usually kill for hero stories like this, have remained silent.

The Finnish capital city’s largest daily newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat, published this account (translated from Finnish):

Hege Dalen and her spouse, Toril Hansen were near Utöyan having dinner on the opposite shore across from the ill-fated campsite, when they began to hear gunfire and screaming on the island.

“We were eating. Then shooting and then the awful screaming. We saw how the young people ran in panic into the lake,” says Dale to HS in an interview...

1. Nobody wrote about it? Funny, because I've only seen the story about 14 times on DU.
In any event, the US media has been completely ignoring Norway in favor of the apparently imminent collapse of the world economy.

3. Consider the source
There's a lot of things I find out on DU that I would be blissfully ignorant of, if I relied on standard news outlets. Another good reason to keep it on my daily reading list.

And I'm not here every day, so it doesn't surprise me that I didn't see it.

2. They probably were out looking for recruits, and just happened into a mass shooting.
:sarcasm:

5. this may be taken the wrong way but here goes.
If it had been a heterosexual couple, should the headline be 'Hetero couple saves 40....'
of course not.

Trying to make this an advertisement for gay rights and marriage rights just seems a bit askew to me.

and another thing, a couple is a couple, hopefully one day soon we won't have to have adjectives or descriptions of exactly what kind of couple. People make up couples. period.

8. OK, so it should have read "Couple Saves..."

But then, in the interest of building the story to report the news, there would be some description of the couple, would there not? Would they just be left at "a couple," "a married couple," etc? Would their names be mentioned? If their names were "Pat and Tracy," would their sexes be part of the reporting of the story? Does "lesbian couple" help in brevity, or is it "SHOVING IT DOWN SOMEONE'S THROAT?"

Not accusing you of saying that or being that way, but.

Regardless, the only place I've seen mention of it was here.

Edit: spelling

9. Maybe because it's no big deal in Norway?
That's what happens in a place where gay marriage is so accepted no one even bothers to comment on it.
