The12-person commission is now law. That said, who should be on it?

Keep in mind that only Senators that voted YES on the bill are eligible.

That means no Sanders, Gillibrand, Harkin, Lautenberg, Menendez, Merkley, or Nelson.

But the good news is it also means no Paul, Graham, Demint, Chambliss, Coburn, Rubio, or Toomey (among other Repukes) either.

I say Kerry, Whitehouse, Franken, Boxer, Brown, and Coons.

1. That sounds like a pretty fair list to me.
I wish Gillibrand were on it, though.

5. Good point... That opens it up to 95 more Democrats....
...but none of them named Dennis Kucinich, Maxine Waters, or several others that voted no.

3. Obama won't allow Franken or Boxer to serve.
He'll make his calls. He wants the commission as conservative as possible IMO.

6. The statute says that Reid and Pelosi make the decisions.... and since you think the President is
"weak", you think he'll be able to armtwist them?

Can't have it both ways... either he's strong or he's weak.

9. As I said, Obama will make his calls
Edited on Tue Aug-02-11 02:53 PM by Cali_Democrat
He's proven to be very capable of arm twisting Dems into voting for conservative policies, but he's utterly incapable of standing up to the GOP and he adopts their positions many times. Therefore, he will try to stack the committee with conservative Dems to please the GOP.

Boxer, Franken and Whitehouse will not be on the committee. Obama could pull some strings if he wanted to and get these guys on it, but he won't do it. He's the leader of the Democratic Party.

Obama likely wants conservative Dems there and he will to anything he can to get them on it in order to please to GOP and Corporate America.

Phone calls are going out with the goal of making sure the committee follows a certain agenda.

7. I think that's the way the legislation was written... to be on the committee, you had to vote for
the bill.

I feel like I'm back in high school--

Oh, sorry KansDem, but you can't be on the team/in the club because ________(enter some ridiculous reason here designed to keep the undesirables off the team/out of the club).

Oh, man!!! I can't be on the team/in the club!

10. Catch-22. Only senators who voted for the turd are allowed to fondle it.
Whereas, people who warned that the turd has no clean end to pick up, are forbidden to deal with it.

Or, would you prefer the likes of McConnell and Cornyn?
