About poor people ..they are us...right now.
Oh, you don't think so?
At this moment, on these internet connections, at the Democratic Underground.Com
... there are people writing who need more social services, not less.
They will be hurt by this deal.
They do not have home computers, but are sitting at libraries writing, (currently on the East Coast, but later across the
country).. watching, and writing..
They do not have jobs, but they do have time.

Oh, you don't thing so?
Think about this.
If there are 20 people on line right now, across all of the DU forums,
and one in six Americans are currently out of work, looking for jobs.
and a large number of seniors are poor, say 30 percent, and have time..

Then who are we?
It is very likely that we are talking about fellow members here.
Right here, Right now.

2. DU is probably at least 40-45% older white woman...
When's the last time my neighbor Juan with the landscaping business signed into DU?

Oh yeah, he doesn't cause he's busy working in 107 degree heat.

Or my neighbor Lisa across the street...no, she doesn't play on the Intertubes  she perfers to hang outside with her friends in the evenings...

How about all those roofers on DU..Nice of ya to take a break from the tarpaper to come join us!

DU is not representative of America at all....

5. I would argue that there are people at this website, right now
who are poor.
Yes, most here are educated, and informed. But you can be educated and informed and have little income.

Yes, Juan did not sign in, but perhaps someone Juan knows did. There are all types of people here. Maybe one of the roofers
signs in at nite? Who knows. Also, wouldn't you say we represent a larger percentage then the freepers?

6. Nope, freepers are a different breed, sure there are people who are wealthy and people who are poor

but most of DU is older white women proved in poll after poll after poll....

How many tweens are on DU?

How many people who think 2Pac is the shiznit post on DU? I think I'm the only one...

We don't have too many Hispanics as a percentage of the population. Anything that requires manual labor, that entire workforce is absent from DU. When's the last time you saw somebody post who was a heavy equipment operator? There are probably three maybe four people on DU who could have known how to put the p-trap in my shower correctly (including me :) ) Oh, and I have a slab foundation to add to the bitchiness of that job....

There's a reason Ray Williams Johnson get's millions of views a day and people here flip out over 100 replies

3. It seems like yesterday we just reached a "new normal"
as in things are only going to get unalterably worse for the many - and that this will be our new normal. And yes it is us.

I see nothing being done to spur the economy and increase job creation regardless of the stupid linking the reasons for no jobs = the us deficits and debt.

I see nothing being done to make sure that the safety nets stay in place rather than become the favorite cutting block of this new "super committee" as such cutting may be life and death for some - it wouldn't hurt the donors behind the big lobbyists.

I am not ready for and do not welcome this "new normal."

4. I haven't gotten a raise in 5 years...
My dad when he was my age worked as a mechanic for the city of NYC. He was able to buy a home, raise for kids, put them all through college, buy a small cottage in Canada and retire with a very good pension with full benefits.

Me? I will die at my desk. Ironically, I'm making the same amount of money he made with the city. He had a union, I, sadly, do not.

8. Just saying
I have never been under the illusion that the people here are not majority middle class and the working poor; Rich people don’t have these conversations. But it is tragic that we spend so much time, talking about and venting anger and so little time looking for workable solutions. We as a collective surely have the knowledge to find a workable solution. “Two heads are better than one”. In my 40 years I have learned the sharing information helps people not make the same mistakes, others have made. Example, had a few of us who knew and shared information on the housing shame, how many other people could have avoided the same fate? As a parent I try and shield my kids from making life changing mistakes, who said we could not do the same for each other? If you see me standing on the tracks when a train is coming, please pull me away, seems like more people would rather pull out the cell phones and post my death on Youtube, IMO.

10. I have been around for awhile
Edited on Tue Aug-02-11 10:23 AM by bengalherder
probably since 2001, mostly lurking.

I have seen a change in the demographics here. I don't know what to feel about it, really. Many more here now understand the precarity that the underclasses have felt since Reagan, but it is also tragic that they are in this position as of now.

I am glad my parents didn't live to see this.
