" I get my public safety from the barrel of a gun."
" You just have to understand, some houses are going to burn."
"I have a plow on my truck so I can take care of myself."

These are real quotes from people I know who are fundamentalist Christians and likely Tea Baggers. They were made in connection with small town government and what it should do for its citizens...whether it should continue to fund police, fire and public works. What you see here is a survivalist mentality, a mind-set that says "I'll take care of me and my own and the rest of you can fend for yourselfs." These are people who don't expect their girls and most of their boys to go past high school. Many of them home school and don't really put much stock in education. Take this microcosm and enlarge it and I think you'll discover the driving philosophy behind the Tea Party and it's grip on the nation today. These folks simply don't care about the larger community, they don't believe in a larger community, they think they can live very well without the larger community or any meaningful government. They don't value education (which is probably why the Pell Grant program became a sticking point in Washington last week).

When I asked one of the folks I quoted above whether he thought the town needed to continue to support its ambulance service, he shrugged and shook his head and said, "Listen, things happen, it's God's will."

This, I believe, is a snapshot of what we're dealing with on a national level.

1. many survivalists
aren't doing it because it's insurance against the failure of the nation or world, they WANT the failure to happen and believe that they are uniquely situated to take advantage of such a failure. They envision a new world order with them on top (something they don't have now).

Who will those rugged individualists call to come to their aid when all is chaos?

10. No, I don't think so.
A tribal mentality would have us banding together in actual "tribes" for mutual aid.

What we see here with these gun-totin' bible-thumping freaks is a sociopathic mentality, the same kind that celebrates the "lone cowboy" or the "mountain man".

"Jeremiah Johnson lived alone in the mountains, I can too."

When their 6-month supply of MREs run out, they'll take their guns and come down to our village looking to take what they need.

When I said tribal, I thought it was obvious that I was making reference to the insular kind of thinking that goes in tribes - a great xenophobia.

7. We live in Oklahoma.
We have a shotgun in the living room. Our garage got broken into a few weeks back. I've become a little paranoid. It took a little while for the cops to arrive after that happened. If someone knocks down my door and it is my life or theirs, they are getting a shotgun shoved in their face, and I will not hesitate to pull the trigger.
There IS such a thing as being a FAR LEFT Gun nut. We also have a rifle and a pistol. And as the country deteriorates, you're going to wish you had a gun because home invasions and robberies are going to become far more commonplace. And if the police can't be funded. It'll be anarchy. Alarmist, yes. Being prepared, smart!

13. don't get all paranoid
just google "cheap home security" and find low cost ways to keep vandals and crooks away from your house. Motion lights on your garage, most likely would have sent them away. fake cameras and alarm signs work and cost little. 3 inch screws in all door hinges and strikers make it harder to kick in a door. Simple stops on window secure them from easy entry. A yappy little dog will earn its chow. That is being prepared and smart.

Sure you can shoot someone and then your troubles begin. Law suits, nightmares and the guys friends and family looking for revenge, all will keep you awake at night.

49. Yep, let's hear it for the doxies... I've got one too.
She's one of the littlest dachshunds I've ever seen. She is full grown and only weighs about 9 1/2 pounds. Nonetheless, she is nothing but muscle, athletic, and fierce. When she barks she does sound like a dog 5 times her size. She is completely bonded with me as the "alpha" in the house, but has a "friendly rivalry" with my roomie and barks at him scoldingly for the slightest "perceived" offense. It's really funny to watch her being "the boss" of the situation, lol. :hi:

Here are my 2 sweeties; Chacho (Chihuahua, of course) and Little Bess:

My dapple baby was cute when she was little but then she got FAT. The other one is a double-dapple we adopted from a rescue when he was about a year old. Together they are partners in crime, but the female is definitely Momma's baby and lets everyone know it! Edited to add: she's lost about 6 pounds this summer and is still losing, we finally figured out that she is snacking on cat food when we aren't looking (we moved it up high so she can't reach it). At least now you can see her waist.

Edited on Sat Jul-30-11 05:19 PM by Flubadubya
and I certainly recognize that pose your little guy is into. They seem to love rolling over on their backs and giving you that winsome look that just screams, "Scratch my tummy please!!"

The little girl doesn't look very fat at all, but I would imagine she might have when she was carrying that extra 6 pounds.

Eating the cat food? No surprise there. It never ceases to amaze me what all they WILL eat. Little Bess is the "Mikey" of the pair for sure, and is a "strict ominvore", lol. :) Last night I accidentally dropped a little piece of broccoli on the kitchen floor and Chacho was the first on the scene but, picky as he is, of course, he just turned his nose up to it. Bess came in behind him and ate it right up. She likes fruits of any kind... she'll just about eat anything!

Little Bess was a "rescue dog" of sorts. When I was looking for a dachshund puppy, our local groomer told me of lady nearby who had a small breeding brood (about 4 or 5 dams and a few sires), so not exactly a puppy mill, for sure. As it turns out, I went to look at the puppies and ended up falling in love with Mom - i.e. Little Bess. Sadly, she was less than a year old when one of the sires broke out of his pen and got with her. She carried the pups to term but had to have a Caesarean section and the vet determined she could or should not have any more pups and spayed her. Thus, she was no longer useful as breeding stock. I asked if I could have her instead of a puppy and they were more than happy to let me buy her. Bess was only a year old at that time, so she was still a young 'un herself. She will be 3 years old next month and Chacho is just 4 months younger.

Bess and Chacho both are precious pups and I just love 'em so. Yours certainly look like real sweethearts too. I know how you must feel about them!

Thanks for sharing!

Edit to correct misspelling of dachshund!

...which will last until the first major riot that isn't put down by police presence. The models for the slide of civilization are pretty similar on that scale of events.

After that, you can't count on electricity and no one will care about cameras, dogs, or the sound of breaking glass. The screws is a good one though.

Most other countries are culturally driven for the betterment of the community. Taxes going for free education for everyone, free medical care for everyone, 6 weeks of paid vacation a year by law, regulations that protect the consumer....the U.S. can't begin to fathom such a culture.
