It seems it should be pronounced, depending on the German dialect of his ancestors, something like "beur-nuh" or "behr-nuh." Maybe "Boy-nuh." Just as "Schroeder" is "Shroy-duh" in some German dialects.

"Burner" is closer but sounds more like a destructive force, it suggests an arsonist. But it seems they want "Bay-ner" because it is much farther from the way an 8th grader would say his last name and what that pronunciation would suggest: someone who f**ks up the country.
