1. Hiring for part-time, low paying jobs..
bush's uniquely American: two, three p/t jobs to pay the bills..
or..live with your parents...like forever.

4. May be better than other areas
There are help wanted signs.

There's a billboard in I-95, south of Philadelphia, advertising hiring of people who know Linux (I think that's what it is, I'm not really computer literate at that level).

But that is when I'm shopping so probably not the best paid jobs. But still a job is a job.

26. A job is almost always better than no job but by no means is a job a job.
Subsistence at best, death spiral at worst wages along with money pit insurance makes a literal world of difference. You start considering retirement plans, stock options, and benefit time and you have night and if add any things like fulfillment, enjoyment, and upward mobility and you aren't even in the same hemisphere.

5. 20% REAL unemployment, 2nd highest in state, losing population in the county
because of it, high rate of empty houses.

"Alabama's unemployment rate holds at 9.3 percent but in Monroe County nearly 17 percent of the population is out of work."
says Mobile Ala tv news
but
local paper says 20%

Also, for comparison to other areas, we have:
income per capita is $18,522, which includes all adults and children. The median household income is $33,898.

7% in May according to the State of Texas. The problem is that our economy is still slow because there are not that many professional jobs here outside of healthcare.

We also have a huge industrial plant opening here next year, and that should help more people achieve a higher standard of living.

30. I was thinking about it relative to the national average of 9%
a state average of 8%, and that other cities with our demographics are as bad off if not worse.

But you are correct that 7% isn't really "Good."

The City of SF was also able to minimize layoffs when they passed the most recent budget, too.

Edited on Sat Jul-23-11 12:12 PM by AsahinaKimi
Her Unemployment insurance is soon to run out. I think she can apply for an extension but if there are no jobs in the area, what can she do? She's out looking each day, and I have given her lots of advice, for when I was looking for work. I hope she makes it before the insurance runs out.

I'm getting a lot of interviews, myself. But I hold a Masters degree. It helps also that I have been focusing on the public sector. As for someone whose experience in retail, I don't know what to say.

Edited on Sat Jul-23-11 12:10 PM by WorseBeforeBetter
as community colleges, universities, and other state government employers cut 7,600 workers. The state Employment Security Commission said Friday that the jobless rate rose from May's 9.7 percent rate, the level where it had been stuck for three months. The number of unemployed increased by more than 9,500 workers to almost 450,000. Government was the big job-loser in June, cutting 10,200 jobs as school boards, municipalities and state agencies tightened belts.

The number of workers drawing a paycheck has grown by 11,000 in the past year and the number unemployed has fallen by more than 28,000. Official jobless figures don't count as unemployed people who have stopped looking for work or settled for part-time jobs."

Very noticeable drop in the past 2 months, everything left is 'contract work' for three or six months with a chance of permanent hire. Just nothing out there at all.

24. my wife and i are very lucky to have good paying secure jobs.
We both work for large corporations, me in the data storage arena and my wife, big pharma. even though big pharma is responsible for totally screwing with health care in general, they are pretty great to work for. (she makes more than i do, and I would be considered rich to alot of people) I do have friends that have been out of work for years, and i see first hand what it does to folks. One friend has basically turned to booze to fill his days and has stopped looking for work. He is in property management, or he was anyway.
very sad what's happening, it especially upsetting when someone can't pay the mortgage and looses their home after living and paying for it for years.
heartbreaking in fact.
here's to hoping things get better soon. I do feel blessed that i am employed and doing very well, I wish their were something I could do to help.

36. I'm in northeastern Ohio. No brainer. Poor. 8.8% unemployment,
officially, statewide, thought it's actually a little lower here. There are people applying for food stamps who never thought it could happen to them, even as the Republican government in Columbus is doing everything it can to eliminate food stamp workers. Cleveland just laid off hundreds of cops and firefighters due to the State's budget cuts and elimination of the estate tax.

There is anger building here.
