What did he win? Has the debt ceiling been raised? If so, what did Obama give in exchange? If not, why is there this air of celebration in GD? I do understand that he showed anger while he read his talking points, but being angry at the GOP is a far cry from having the debt ceiling raised. Clearly, I missed something, or I would understand why we're celebrating. Please, someone help me shed my cluelesness and let me know how this is a win.

thanks.

1. I'd love to see the presser, but CSPAN seems obsessed with the Brits' trash collection issues.

2. It's only a win in appearance, IMO.
He was angry, said the seniors, etc, couldn't afford another cut in benefits, then he said he had offered cuts in their benefits but it wasn't enough pain and misery for Boehner and the teaparty.

4. He only won in the sense that he didn't back down on raising revenue.
There's still no agreement in the debt limit.

6. They are celebrating that they get a default instead of cuts in social security and medicare
Which is funny because anyone who looks at the numbers will come to the conclusion that the promises made exceed our capacity to deliver.

8. Nobody won anything. President Obama enabled the Repukes and they shit on him for...
...attempting to do business with them. Obama was so "generous", he put things "on the table" he should never have. $650 billion cuts to Social Security/Medicare, for instance. That's from the President's OWN MOUTH less than half an hour ago.

As fucked as that is, the Repukes were so greedy they walked out of talks via-a-vis Boehner.

President said he's calling everyone into his office tomorrow at 11am and they all have to explain why the fuck they're willing to destroy America and, if not, what they fuck they are going to do about it.

No debt ceiling was raised but the President said that he would be willing to take Mitch McConnel's plan and raise the debt ceiling himself- BUT that plan is a gilded cage because for every dollar the president raises the ceiling, he has to cut from something currently going on. Look, read this:

"McConnell is a very clever guy. He set up an intricate, multi-tiered trap to deliver on his promise to get Obama out of office and devastate the Democrats..."

10. thanks for the responses, all.
I think I have a better idea now of what was/wasn't covered in the press conference. I can't say I'm pleased, but I did ask the question in neutral fashion, and received answers from both sides of the Obama Divide, so I won't use this space to catalog my disappointment and anger about the whole thing (that's what the rest of GD is for).

Thank you.

14. You'd be better off watching the press conference yourself before building up anger
Don't take DU 's word for it, nor any media "analysis"

13. He painted Orange Man and Company into a corner
whatever move they (R) make will probably determine whether or not they stay a viable party for a long time.

I am still taking a wait-and-see attitude.

17. I remember last week when Obama scolded Cantor...
there was also an air of celebration on GD. Obama was praised for saying something like "I will not yield on this", even though nobody seemed to know what "this" referred to. At the time, it seemed that Cantor had proposed a clean short-term increase in the debt ceiling. Nice try Cantor, but you've been schooled.

Now a week has passed, and Obama has proposed chopping SS, Medicare, and Medicaid. After negotiations broke down today, Obama had a stern press conference. Apparently we're going to cut a clean increase in the debt ceiling (or so I'm told). This is a great victory, of course. Or something.

20. Wow, I haven't watched this yet, but there seems to be more drama
acting than a noontime soap opera. We are being manipulated, folks. To what end? I don't know, but as a wise man once said, "Follow the money".

21. Nobody won anything. The Obama crew pulls out their talking points every time he speechifies.
He admitted that he was going to concede massive amounts of money, but the Republicans walked away from the table because they are even more insane than he is craven and spineless.
