Emanuel Lays Off City Workers
But Union Leader Insists that Mayor Never Offered Any Negotiations

By NADA SHAMAH

Mayor Rahm Emanuel has sent out 625 pink slips to city employees, all in the name of saving the city money.

The layoffs, which, according to Emanuel, will save the city almost $12 million, will affect most of the Chicago Department of Transportation’s seasonal employees, custodians at Midway and O’Hare airports and Chicago Public Libraries, and workers who run the city’s water-bill call center and manage city benefits.

“My duty as mayor is to protect our city’s taxpayers and be their voice, not to protect the city’s payroll,” Emanuel said at a City Hall press conference last Friday.

“No amount of smoke and mirrors can put off the tough decisions any longer,” he said.

“We are greatly concerned about the 625 families and workers who did nothing wrong and did nothing to create the budget deficit we faced two years ago as well as today,” said Jorge Ramirez, president of the Chicago Federation of Labor.

2. Rahm will privatize Chicago.
Emanuel is looking to privatize custodial services and the water-bill call center.

9. Funny how publicly-paid politicians want to privatize services (alliteration unintended!).

be their voice, not to protect the city’s payroll".

The people "on the payroll are "taxpayers" too.

Fuck him and all of his lot...He's a prick on wheels.

10. Same thing said about teachers, as though they are not also tax-paying citizens.

5. Say, Rahm! How much a cut are you taking?
To "protect (y)our city’s taxpayers and be their voice?"

Funny, a Google search of "rahm emanuel" and "pay cut" results in "0"...

So how about it, Rahm? "Lead by example?"

8. How fucking stupid do you have to be to vote for Rahm Emanuel?
Chicago bought a rotten lemon and they will be paying for it forever.

13. This is what happens when people vote off of name recognition instead of
studying the candidates.

11. Rahm won a crushing victory--55% of the vote in a six-way field.
Clearly, Chicago wanted him. Now Chicago has got him.
