Puppies rescued after being trapped inside 10-inch pipe

Three puppies that became stuck after straying into a 10-inch, mud-filled drainage pipe were rescued July 19 after spending hours in the cold, damp tunnel.

The border collie/springer spaniel mixes, owned by Michael Tiller, wandered into a culvert underneath a paved driveway at 59702 Deer Haven Lane just outside St. Helens. The puppies were playing outside when one crawled into the pipe. The other two followed behind, causing the pack to become trapped in the mud.

Around 6 p.m. Columbia River Fire & Rescue firefighters and a St. Helens Public Works crew used a pavement cutter to create an opening above the dogs, before sucking mud out of the hole with a sewer flush truck. The rescue took about 1.5 hours.
