Economic slump curbs Americans' summer travel
Edited on Fri Jul-15-11 04:44 PM by marmar
NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - Hit by the country's economic slow-down, a majority of Americans do not plan to travel this summer, and most of those who will won't be going far from home, according to a new poll.

Over a third, or 34 percent, of people surveyed in a Marist poll said that they had changed their travel plans to save money.

The telephone survey also showed that 55 percent of American adults won't be booking any summer vacation plans at all, compared to 52 percent in the summer of 2010.

"We're continuing to see the effects of the economic slump on people's vacation plans" said Dr. Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College poll. "People are reacting to the downturn and adjusting their vacation plans accordingly." ..............(more)

3. And those businesses that cater to vacationers are suffering as well,
Gas stations, tourist spots, recreation, etc. etc. And thus the snowball continues to roll merrily along, gathering steam, getting bigger.

4. I feel lucky. the place I work is very tourist dependent and we're doing better than
last year and last year we did better than the year before. I think it's because we're about as quirky as it gets. I can't tell you the number of times I hear "this place is so magical". And it's not like the majority of folks who come are wealthy. Maybe it's partly we're unique and that people are willing to give themselves small treats. We also make sure that people know that the farmer down the road and our neighbors in this poor area know that they are as welcome as can be and we make sure that they can afford a pot of tea and a scone and sit in a beautiful place for hours or play croquet on the lawn or wander the display gardens at no charge.
