Pink Floyd Guitarist’s Son Jailed for LSD-Fueled Attack on Royals
Jeff Neumann — Charlie Gilmour, the son of Pink Floyd guitarist Dave Gilmour, was sentenced to 16 months in jail today for attacking a royal Jaguar that was part of Prince Charles and Camilla's motorcade during a student riot in London last year. The riot resulted in the best photograph of British royals ever (above). The court watched video from the attack, where Gilmour yelled:

"Let them eat cake, let them eat cake, they say. We won't eat cake, we will eat fire, ice and destruction, because we are angry, very fucking angry."

Gilmour had dropped acid and taken Valium shortly before saying this. That sounds about right.

It's one thing to do stupid things as a student. We all did stupid things as youngsters.

It's a far more grave matter when a member of the establishment attacks (even if attack here is meant in the virtual sense) the figurehead of your society's social order.

But who knows, I could be very wrong.

3. I think James Murdoch and Brooks will end up in prison for bribing that
man in the royal police (the equivalent of the Secret Service) to get the royal phone book.
I think the press are going with the populist story about the hacking of the murdered 13 year old girl being the last straw, but common sense tells me that the security invasion against the royals was the ultimate last straw. That a newspaper could do that should frighten every society.

8. Wrong
He is not another brick in the wall. He is trying to take down the wall.

I wonder: were he drunk on ale if this would be a headline?

Of course it would. The son of one of our culture's icons doing anything to make a statement against the 'wall' simply must be trashed.

17. Well, maybe a strongly worded letter would have garnered more attention.
That always works for Harry Reid.

10. Solidarity Charlie. Thank you for fighting for what you believe in.
Charlie certainly is a "rich kid" and he could very easily just enjoy his money and go about his life. Instead he chooses to acknowledge the injustices that are laid out before us. I applaud his actions and wish him safety while incarcerated. JMHO.

21. Because doing a few 1000 hours of community service would be of more use
I know that Prince Charles has several excellent charities he sponsers right there in Great Britian. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Prince%27s_Charities). I'm sure there is one that Gilmour's kid could spend time helping with that perhaps would make him mature a bit more and give back to the community.

22. The context is not being made clear...
This was in the context of a demonstration against the tripling of tuition fees and ending of the Educational Maintenance Allowance, organized by the National Union of Students. Mostly it went off very peacefully. It had nothing really to do with the royals, and a lot to do with Cameron and Clegg.

Whatever issues Gilmour has with the royal family, and whatever drugs he'd taken, a lot of us wish that he'd stayed at home, and not caused trouble that was inevitably used by the Tories and anti-student types to try and discredit the demonstration and the students' cause.

I do agree with Lynne that community service would have been better than a prison term. I also agree that Murdoch and his sleaze gang deserve a lot more severe punishment than he does.
