Can someone tell me what Obama's current position is r/e debt ceiling?
What does he want out of the current negotiations? I'm kind of confused right now.

At first I thought he wanted to simply get the debt ceiling raised while giving up as few spending cuts as possible. But then he started talking about grand bargains and $4 trillion in taxes and spending cuts, including those to social safety net programs.

So would he sign a clean bill that raises the debt limit and does nothing else? It sounds like he rejected such an approach when Cantor proposed it. Maybe it was too short-term? But he's also talking about bigger is better, and how we have a unique opportunity to do something extraordinary.
Would he sign a grand bargain that raises some taxes and cuts Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security?
Would he sign something that cuts about $2 trillion, as has apparently been talked about in the Biden-led discussions?

Does anyone here know?

1. He's suggested a "clean" bill to raise the debt ceiling, no preconditions.
He's also "offered" a deal to lower the deficit by $4 trillion over ten years, not that the Repubs are going to agree.

He's also said that he will veto any short-term debt extension ceiling bills which would move the problem down the road a few months or a year.

2. How long does a clean bill extend the debt ceiling?
I keep reading that the limit was raised seven times when Bush was president. That sounds like about once a year. Is a year acceptable?
