Bernie Sanders to Obama: Keep your word on Social Security
Bernie Sanders to Obama: Keep your word on Social Security

By Bernie Becker - 07/12/11 04:58 PM ET

The Senate’s left flank continues to be unhappy with President Obama’s willingness to discuss entitlement reform in the current deficit talks.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) noted Tuesday in a speech on the Senate floor that Obama had vowed not to cut Social Security when running for president in 2008.

“So, Mr. President, when you ask why the American people are frustrated with politicians, and are increasingly cynical, it has a lot to do with candidates who say one thing and do another thing,” Sanders said. “If you told the American people you're not going to cut Social Security, then don't cut Social Security. Keep your word.”

Other liberal senators, like Ohio's Sen. Sherrod Brown, have criticized the president for considering changes to Medicare.

5. Anyone that wants to be trusted should always keep their word on everything.
Sometimes, yes, there are catastrophic/unpredictable events that make keeping your word impossible, or that the person reneging on their word explains why they did not keep their word openly and transparently.

But people overlook and understand these rare types of valid reasons for not keeping one's word, if, in their past experience, they have found a person to be honest and responsiible and they can rely on the person's word.

But when someone consistently and seemingly inexplicably fails to keep their word, most people will view a person like this as a liar and/or untrustworthy flake/con artist and will lose all trust in them.

This is really excellent advice that Senator Sanders is offering to the President.
:-)

7. ONLY 77 House Democrats have voted to defend Medicare and Social Security?
Picked up this comment from another website --

Only 77 House Democrats have vowed to defend Medicare and Social Security. My opinion is that this group should break off and form a new party. If we stay with the Dems we are going to be bulldozed anyway.

What about the Senate -- ?
