Man clubbed to the ground then shot to death when his beer explodes on impact.

"They asked my dad if he was the person buying alcohol for underage youth," Jerrica Cor-Dova said.

According to Turner's son, his father denied the claims, but deputies continued to question him. Turner then asked officers if he was being arrested. The deputies said no, and Turner grabbed his stuff and began to walk away.

"As he was walking away, the officers came up behind him and hit him in the back of the legs with a club, causing him to fall on his knees," Cor-Dova said.

Turner's son said the bag his father was carrying fell to the ground and the beer in the bag exploded. The next thing he heard was two shots being fired.

Wow.

3. Former NFL running back fatally shot in altercation with police
David “Deacon” Turner, a running back who spent three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, has lost his life due to an altercation with police, according to Bakersfield.com.

(snip)

The incident occurred after police responded to reports of juveniles attempting to persuade adults to purchase alcohol for them. When the officers arrived, they saw Turner, 56, his 19-year-old son, and a 16-year-old juvenile leaving the store with bags that contained among other things alcohol.

(snip)

Per the report, police initially detained Turner. He initially cooperated, but Turner then tried to leave. When the officers tried to stop Turner from leaving, he allegedly fought them.

(snip)

One of the officers reportedly was struck in the back of the head with a bag containing two 24-ounce cans of beer. Another officer then drew his pistol and fired twice at Turner.

He was shot because the beer cans exploded.

5. He died, because he failed to learn the lesson of waiting to be dismissed
by the authorities. Evidently the cops are very trigger happy in Bakersfield. Trigger happy and immune from prosecution for murder.

12. And the longer it takes to release the tapes, the more likely the tapes make the cops look bad.
Does anyone think the tapes WOULDN'T be released by now if they supported the cop's version?

It's not like the tapes need to be edited or anything. Eh?

28. No, I don't think they'd be released
When surveillance footage is part of an investigation it is very rarely ever released publicly, and I don't believe it should be. There is a case here in Philly where a bar patron was beaten up outside the bar after being thrown out who later died at the hospital. The surveillance video outside the bar has never been publicly released as it is evidence for the murder trial of the bar employees and owner who allegedly beat the man. I have no problem with it not being publicly released and believe that it should not be. The only people that need to see it are the ones in the courtroom at the trial. I also think it shouldn't be publicly released as a courtesy to the man who was beaten and his family and because of its graphic nature. I'm not in favor of trial by media where important evidence is released to the public to gawk over and form opinions of before trial especially because the media can and will edit the the footage that they release to portray whatever "side" the media wants to portray.

I see no reason why the police would want to release footage of an incident currently under investigation that is important evidence that there is a possibility that it may be used at a trial. And as we all know, the media is free to edit the footage to portray whichever "side" they want to, so there is no point in releasing it anyway. I also think it would be a terrible thing to do to the man's family and friends to have his graphic death plastered all over public tv.

33. The family wants the tapes released.
Videos are released ALL. THE. TIME.

It's public record. A murder may or may not have been committed in the name of law enforcement. It should be public record.

21. Exactly. Police officers are trained professional liars.
If I'm on a jury, I'll treat the words of a police officer as lies, unless his testimony also has corroborating evidence.

11. I thought that was what the article was going to contain.
That they hit him and the cans hit the ground and exploded in his face, killing him. Sadly, the article is far worse. From reading some posts here, Bakersfield sounds like a deathtrap for minorities.

Sheriff's spokesman Craig Rennie says Turner was cooperative at first, but then hit one of the deputies in the back of the head with a bag containing canned beer that he was carrying.

24. Isn't the proper punishment for hitting a cop on the head "assaulting a police officer" not shooting
the person? It says "But according to the sheriff's department, the shots were fired because one of the officers was hit over the head with the items in the bag. His son said that never happened."

Even if that did happen, telling dude he is under arrest for assaulting an officer is what happens, then a trial, etc.

I feel these cops were already feeling aggressive because of their perception of threat around them and when they heard the can pop just reacted. That's just my guts talking though.
