That is the Joel Klein who recently left as CEO of NYC schools. As soon as he left, he joined Murdoch's company. Now he is going to be a big honcho in the "clean-up."
From the Guardian:
Phone hacking scandalAn official message sent to staff following her 4pm meeting reveals Will Lewis, Simon Greenberg and Jeff Palker – Brooks's lieutenants – will "report directly" to New York based Joel Klein on the clean-up.
The key paragraphs from Brooks's message to staff are below:
"People have asked if it is right for me, as CEO of News International and as the Editor of the News of the World until January 2003, to oversee our efforts to assess allegations, address serious issues and prevent them from happening again. I'm determined that News International does this.
For the avoidance of any doubt, however, the News Corporation independent directors agree with James Murdoch's recommendation that the Management and Standards Committee, comprised of Will Lewis, Simon Greenberg and Jeff Palker, report directly to Joel Klein in New York. Joel is leading and directing the Company's overall handling of this matter. Many of you will know that Joel is a respected former Assistant Attorney General of the United States. Joel and Viet Dinh, an independent director, are giving oversight and keeping our parent Company's Board advised as well."
Not a word about the turmoil left behind in NYC schools.
More from the NY Daily News:
Waiting on Joel Klein to hear truth about News of the World hacking scandalTell me it ain't so, Joel!
Tell me I can take the word of Joel Klein that when I turn on Fox News or subscribe to The Daily iPad app or buy the Post or The Wall Street Journal, I am not supporting a corporation whose top brass condoned hacking the phone of a teen murder victim. Tell me I am not supporting executives who also knew about hacking the phones of fallen soldiers and bribing cops and stealing particulars from the medical records of an afflicted baby.
.."Your new boss announced that you, the eminent Joel Klein, would be conducting an internal investigation and "provide important oversight and guidance."
In the meantime, Murdoch sought to dampen the public outcry by shutting down News of the World.
He continued to use the word "innocent" to describe Rebekah Brooks, who was the paper's editor during some of the most despicable hacking.
As school CEO Klein was not public school teacher friendly. In fact the head of a charter school was close enough to him to get schools closed at her apparent request.

Success Charter Network founder Eva Moskowitz and NYC Chancellor Joel Klein sharing a laugh during an event. On Oct. 3, 2008, Eva Moskowitz, a former city councilwoman and head of four charter schools in Harlem, e-mailed schools Chancellor Joel Klein for help. Moskowitz wanted more space to expand her Harlem Success academies and she had two specific public school buildings in mind.
"Those schools are ps194 and ps241," she wrote to Klein. "It would be extremely helpful to move quickly on."
Less than two months later, the Department of Education announced plans to phase out those schools and use the space to expand two Harlem Success academies.
