On Feasting & Fasting

My wife and I just got home. I had been invited to speak this evening, at a Unitarian Universalist Church. In the past month, I have been concerned by the lack of response from some elected and appointed officials in New York State, in regards issues with proposed hydraulic fracking. My talk today was the first of two parts, regarding “direct action” to draw attention to these issues.

I was happily surprised, as I was preparing to speak, to see a number of frames with photographs and old newspaper articles, documenting a young minister's speech there some half-century ago. Martin Luther King, Jr., had spoken in this same building, urging people to become active participants in the struggle for civil rights.

To say it was humbling for an old scruft like me to have an opportunity to speak there is an understatement.

In two weeks, I will return to lay out some plans for late summer. Until then …..

1. I believe direct action is the only thing that can -- or might -- save us, at this point
Certainly working "within the system" they've laid out for us is entirely useless...

7. It offers the potential
of waking people up -- both to their humanity, and to the dire situation we are all in.

Studying up on Gandhi & King.

2. Good luck on your mission. Flower Mound, Texas, near Dallas, has some
water issues regarding fracking. I hope you can get it stopped or get protections in place.

4. Rosa Parks said a lot, too.
You are in good company, H20 Man.

5. I'm glad you're doing this!
Fracking is going to finish off the fragile environment. The earthquakes around Guy, AR have stopped since they stopped fracking. I heard they are going to start again very soon.

Did you see the posts about the forest death in Virginia from the chemicals? Sorry, I'm lazy and don't want to find the thread, but I'm sure you've already read it.

Your work is as important as MLK's! :applause:

6. Keep us posted on how we can help.
As a UU, certainly happy to hear of their involvement in getting this resolved.
