Alabama GOP Defector Cites Teacher Bashing

A Republican legislator in Alabama fed up with his colleagues bashing educators has decided to switch parties.

Daniel Boman, elected as a Republican in November, became convinced that the state GOP was no longer interested in helping the middle class. Legislation passed during this past legislative session attacked educators’ right to due process and their right to have their union dues deducted from their paychecks.

“I realized that I was for the working class people, I was for the poor the middle class, just your average day person,” Boman told MSNBC’s Ed Schultz in an interview (below, minute 2:40). When I got to Montgomery I realized that the Republican party just wasn’t for that.”

The executive director of the Alabama Education Association, Dr. Paul Hubbert, said that Boman was upset after voting for the payroll deduction elimination bill.

I'm afraid he will find that Democrats hate teachers almost as much as Republicans do. Just ask Arne Duncan.
