SF Pride for Bradley Manning contingent photos
Posted by Jeff Petersen, Courage to ResistJ

“God knows what happens now. Hopefully worldwide discussion, debates, and reforms… I want people to see the truth... because without information, you cannot make informed decisions as a public.” That’s an excerpt from an online conversation the FBI attributes to 23 year-old Bradley Manning. Over 50 supporters marched to support Bradley this morning in the 2011 SF Pride Parade.

10. Small group of Bradley haters on the board.
Fear not: his backers make up a huge majority.

19. Indeed it is. Was there a similar contingent in NYC?
If not, there ought to have been.

Maybe next year. Though lets hope by then the 2012 version of Barrack Obama will have decided to drop this asinine prosecution.

8. Um, the issues came pre-mixed. And when the Marines decided
to humiliate a gay American with forced nudity, they made a stupid mistake. Take it up with them.

11. I'll take the view that Manning's sexual orientation has nothing whatsoever to do
with his alleged crimes or the charges against against him

I'll further take the view that when a soldier commits suicide in brig, the next soldier, who jokes a few weeks later about how easily he himself could commit suicide, is acting the fool and has no complaint if the authorities take anti-suicide precautions -- and again I'll take the view that Manning's sexual orientation has nothing whatsoever to do with that

If you seriously want to win a public opinion fight on Manning's case, you're going to have to address real issues in a coherent manner: just stirring the pot won't work -- and in fact it's likely to backfire big time

15. Have you ever been to Pride? There are quite a few issues presented. Manning is a gay American.
He is a gay American that many other gay Americans (and their supporters) view as a hero.

21. The wikileaks connection will likely turn into a millstone.
People feel strongly about that issue regardless of the sexual orientation of Manning. The obvious question is "would it have been any different if he was heterosexual?" If it would not be different then the sexual orientation issue becomes mute.

I think struggle4progress makes a valid point. There is risk when dissimilar issues get married.

At some level it feels like getting invited to dinner only to have your host (friend) try to sell you Amway when you really prefer a different brand.

22.  Brad Manning is being held by an institution hostile to gay Amercans.
That institution treated him so badly, the United Nations Rapporteur for Torture opened an investigation.

It's good to see the GLBT community finally step up for him because as a gay man, he is at special risk as a prisoner of the Pentagon. Larry Goldsmth, longtime GLBT activist, lays out the stakes here:

Bradley Manning: Rich Man's War, Poor (Gay) Man's Fight

23. That institution also treats anyone suspected of treason badly.
He is in jail because he is accused of a federal crime. He is not in jail because he is accused of homosexuality. Leaking classified documents is a serious crime; especially during wartime.

You are inserting (gay) on top of poor in your last comment too. Gay is not equivalent to poor. Poverty and homosexuality are separate. I don't believe they are as strongly correlated as alcoholism and poverty or mental illness and poverty would be. In fact, (without data) I would suspect that many gay people have a higher than average income.
