5. I'm glad he did the right thing on this, but I don't understand...
....why Obama is held in contempt for making strides towards equality (DADT being the biggie), but Cuomo is held up as a paragon of virtue for making strides towards equality.

for 2 Obama is against real equality
for 3 he showed up at a fundraiser the night before and still couldn't support marriage equality.(I want your money). In general for being a hypocrite on States rights

7. I disagree with your assessment.
I think when it comes to the "whole package" neither Cuomo nor Obama have it all. I think that if a bill could make it through the congress to repeal DOMA and make marriage equality the law of the land, Obama would sign it. I know people want more from him and that's a good thing, but there is is downright animosity, hatred, and contempt for Obama by a segment of our community and I don't understand that. I think getting marriage equality passed in NY is probably easier than getting ANY gay equality measures through the hate mongers in our Congress (can anyone point out anything the republicans didn't turn into shit through procedural and parliamentarian tricks).

And sadly, I think a lot of people are misplacing their frustration at the wrong target and assigning ulterior motives without a solid foundation to make that assignment.

Could he do more? Hell, yes! Could he be perhaps be more blunt and passionate in our defense? Sure.

But that, in and of itself, doesn't make Obama an enemy to our community and it saddens me that many see him as such.

I think what my point here is that Cuomo may be willing to stand up for gay rights in a vocal way, but that's one issue. On some other issues, he's hardly the paragon of liberal values. His support for equality doesn't give him a pass on his austerity positions. He has earned praise on this front, but let's not pretend he's got our back when it comes to education, unions, health care, affordable housing, taxes, etc.

That is what I mean when I say Cuomo isn't necessarily FDR and MLK all rolled up into one nice little package.
