Wow just wow

Last night I went to a bar with my Cousin his boss, who's gay, and this other guy that I guess is friends with my cousin. This guy is a Conservative and lets everyone know it, he actually told us that "if those damn liberals get their socialist dictatorship that the Gays would be the first to go because thats how socialists work. This all happened before we had anything to drink, suffice it to say I stayed as far away from this guy the rest of the night as possible. The ignorance has gotten to the point where if they don't know what they are talking about they just put words together and hope it makes a sentence.

3. I recently saw a hard-to-watch video of a man having a
stroke. As he was having the attack, he spoke words that had nothing to do with one another. Jibberish. I realized his words could be a speech given by any right wing politician to his base.

4. If it had been me, I'd probably have said very loudly to my cousin, "Your friend is an idiot!"
But not everyone is me. I hope the rest of the evening was pleasant for you.

(He really doesn't know the difference between socialists and liberals? OMG.)

5. Funny how they instantly think all liberals = socialists.
In time, maybe a few years, others will look back at them and their stupid notions and laugh at them (in their face) for being complete tools for the RWing spin machine. And the best part, they won't be able to spout garbage anymore - they will feel too humiliated. Stupid has a line in the sand, but time wears down the facade and lies their masters created for their weak brains to absorb.

Just to understand them. I even maybe would have asked some questions to keep him talking.

12. Seems you missed a chance to engage him in coversation and teach him a thing or two.
How will we reach anyone if you just walk away and avoid those with opposing viewpoints? The more these people hear that what they are saying (and probably just parroting from Faux and others) is incorrect the more likely they will start checking into it and find that out for themselves.

At least challenge him with questions asking him to explain himself. He'll get tongue-tied and realize he doesn't know wtf he's talking about.

It's up to us to educate them if no one else will.

15. Arguing with a fool is pointless.

And it is difficult to have a rational discussion with some people because you cannot talk sense into those who willfully choose ignorance. There are certain people who believe what they want to believe until they're ready to believe the truth. You can be more informed, more intelligent, more logical and more articulate than they are, but it does not matter because they scoff at these things. I guess the best thing I've found to do is just nip the RW BS in the bud. I let them rant and rant, then I arm myself with the facts and drop a bomb on their entire argument. In my experience, such persons will usually screw their mouth shut and look like they just passed gas, but they'll never admit they were wrong, even with a mountain of facts staring at them in the face.

16. But one still must try. I like that you bombard them with facts, that's what I mean.
If they keep hearing the truth perhaps one day they will check it out. But we can't just give up. Just like activism, you have to keep trying until you start to chip away at the existing atrocities and eventually they may crumble. (ironically, I say this as I myself feel as if it's all useless here and wonder if I should move to Europe)

I definitely avoid people like that on the internet, but in real life I think it's good to challenge them. If we don't they most definitely will continue to live in their echo chamber. If we do there is the possibility they will one day start to inform themselves with facts.

Love the Jeff Buckley pic btw... I was lucky enough to see him perform live and when he sang Hallelujah a tear rolled down my face. What a loss.

17. Remember, arguing with RW folks has it's main effect on the onlookers.
You confront the crazy with rationality and facts. The person you're arguing with may be unaffected, but the people watching can conclude that you made a sensible argument and the other guy was narrow-minded or stupid. That's a good effect, on the whole.

On the other hand, arguing in an isolated, private one-to-one with a winger - now that's a promise of slow progress.

14. Typical confusion of the word socialist with the word Nazi.
The Nazis had the word "socialist" in their party name but the Nazis weren't socialists. There are plenty of genuine Democratic Socialist countries, many in Europe. Their laws tend to be better than ours.
