13. Interesting the comparison between Canada and the US....
Edited on Sat Jun-25-11 05:08 PM by murphyj87
Same-sex sexual activity legal since.....Canada 1969 .............................. US 2003

Recognition of same-sex unions .........Canada Yes..................................US varies by state

Same-sex marriage .......................Canada since 2003 nationwide since 2005 .. US varies by state majority no

Same-sex adoption........................Canada yes ................................US Single gay persons may adopt, laws on couples vary by state

Allows gays to serve openly in military?.. Canada 1992 ..............................US in theory yes, in practice no

Anti-discrimination Laws (sexual orientation) Canada Bans all anti-gay discrimination, including hate speech
...................................US No federal protections. Banned in 20 states. Included in the federal hate crimes law since 2009

Anti-discrimination Laws concerning gender identity/expression Canada Sex changes legally recognized; Explicit anti-discrimination protections only in NWT, implicit elsewhere; ...US No federal protections. Banned in 13 states. Included in the federal hate crimes law since 2009.

Then when you get to other things, like universal health care and legislated paid parental leave Canada yes ... US no (only unpaid parental leave)

7. I'll trade places with him
He can take my place in Naples, Florida ("hometown" of Rick Scott) and I will gladly go back to New York, with my straight marriage and all. Of course, if he is under 65, he better BE married or he will be very, very lonely, no matter what his sexual orientation is.

8. Used to be Ohio
My Mother In Law died a few years ago. About 15 years ago, she was talking about a very nice young man in her church who ran a catering company. A few years go by and she tells us she thought he might be gay, "except that he's a member of the Methodist Church", so he couldn't be gay, could he?. By the time she died, she admitted he was gay and living with someone, but she loved him. He was a pall bearer at her funeral.

10. My parents knew another couple who moved away from Iowa in protest of gay marriage
They wanted to move to an anti-gay state. They chose Tennessee.

Um, no, they are not friends anymore.

Dude. There is no place where there aren't LGBT people. What on earth are you worried about in the first place?
