A single-engine plane crash Friday evening near a Charlevoix airport seriously injured a member of the University of Michigan basketball team’s 2013 class and killed his father and step-mother.
Austin Hatch, a junior at Canterbury School in Fort Wayne, remains hospitalized in Traverse City as a result of his injuries, authorities said. The crash killed Steve and Kim Hatch, his father and stepmother.
They were aboard a single-engine plane that took off from eastern Indiana and crashed nose-first into the garage along a residential street about 8 p.m. just north of Charlevoix Municipal Airport, said Federal Aviation spokesman Ronald Herwig.

Friday’s crash was the second tragic plane crash involving the Hatch family. In 2003, Steve Hatch was piloting a plane from Michigan to Fort Wayne when it clipped a power pole. Austin was 8 at the time and survived. His mother, Julie, 11-year old sister Lindsay and 5-year old brother Ian were killed in the first crash. Kline said Hatch didn’t discuss that plane crash much.
