Rape is Holy in Uganda and Supported by Christian Fellowship aka The Family: Video of Jeff Sharlet
Also: Members of U.S. Army: it's a holy war in Afghanistan "We are the new Israel!" The army are "special forces for God". An opposing member of the military tells Sharlet "We've been reduced to a fucking clown show" (by the "holy-warriors".)

Just some of the dark stuff you'll hear about as Sharlet discusses his book, "C Street: The Fundamentalist Threat to American Democracy."

The Ugandan story is around 25:00, the military god-warrior nutters 31:25.

About the Program

Jeff Sharlet, contributing editor for Harper's and Rolling Stone magazine, examines religious fundamentalism in American politics. Following up on his last book on the subject, The Family, Mr. Sharlet focuses on a residence located on C Street in Washington, DC that has housed politicians, who according to the author are interested in transforming their religious beliefs into legislation. Jeff Sharlet discusses his book at Politics & Prose bookstore in Washington, DC.

5. Having read many, many of your posts over the years, I can say with great confidence
that you and they are indeed on opposite sides.

As you probably know, I'm a non-believer who lashes out at religion on a daily basis.

I would have no reason to do so if Christians all thought and acted like you.

7. The dark side.
As i've said before, they take Christianity and turned it on its head. At least when it comes to Jesus' words about the poor. The Family for 70 years believed God wants the poor to serve the wealthy and powerful, and low and behold, look where we are today!

All they really are are the same assholes who believed in the "divine right of kings". They've subverted it and made it palatable to bootlickers and the fearful and hate-filled. Just like the Nazis did! (Sharlet writes about that very thing, so Godwin's Law is hereby revoked!)

Edited on Thu Jun-23-11 04:37 PM by Kurovski
prior to the sacred rape, which in the case Sharlet describes, lasts for an entire week.

It's a cure for the evil of a woman loving a woman.

10. There was a rebroadcast on our PBS station "Out and Proud in Chicago"
In which Marge Summit, a chicago Businesswoman and activist talks of rape being the cure back in the 50's-60's ("oh,don't you know?" )for being a lesbian. Yep That would fix ya right up.

She also delivered it in a darkly sarcastic manner. Even by basic decency, we know that it was just a sanctioned way to commit rape, which was the actual goal.

Same in Uganda.

I think reporters need to start asking people who attend The National Prayer Breakfasts in Washington why they attend such an organization's events. The Fellowship/ The Family is in complete control of the breakfasts, it is all their little baby, and they allow and promote awful things in the world. they can offer you a thousand hours of horseshit in defense, but they do promote and support awful, "unchristian" things.

13. I'm not normally paranoid...
...but The Family freaks me out. I appreciate your posts today. And, I agree we need to be asking more questions. A lot more. About a lot of subjects.

I remember the days that (especially) men would discuss "the cure". It wasn't in the 50s or 60s, but in the 70s and 80s and even into the 90s. A lot of people are disillusioned with how things are today. I'm grateful for the progress I've witnessed. I only wish I could live long enough to see the world in total transition. Not just our country, but Uganda and the ME. My freakishly eternal optimism tells me it will happen someday. I see the changes in attitudes, not just in young people but in older people, as well. The opposition is desperate and loud, but they're losing and will lose.

Anyone who uses some convoluted religious argument to rape women does deserve to be burnt alive by Bradley Tanks, not the innocent men, women, and children who were killed at Waco.

33. Yah, but the organization originates from the US and is full of CIA operatives.
Edited on Sat Jun-25-11 04:19 AM by peopleb4money
I'm not saying the CIA is behind the rape, but knowing their history, I'm suspicious and think its possible they may have some sort of hand in this.

In 1984, they even invited Gustavo Alvarez Martinez, then head of the Honduran armed forces who was linked to a death squad and the Central Intelligence Agency. I found that out just from a simple Wikipedia search. I'm sure there's more info out there.

22. Sigh. Christians always want THEIR version of christianity to be more pure than the rest
nobody wants to accept that Christians may be doing stupid shit in the name of their gawd and their lord savior jesus christ.

Trying to pass THESE christians off as satan-in-disguise is disingenuous at best.

Look, these are self-identified Christians. Brothers-in-arms with anyone else who self-identifies as a Christian. Blame it on subtle biblical interpretations? Bullshit.

These are Christians, as fully as anyone else who professes Christ as their savior. No earthly person gets to decide "who" has the right interpretation of the Bible.

23. And by that definition, you can say anything looking like they are good could be bad.
Edited on Thu Jun-23-11 11:22 PM by RandomThoughts
From that came the idea, you can tell them from their fruit.

I don't make claims like that, although I don't mind if someone thinks either thing about me,

And when seeing other things, I say you can't know anyways, and do not say if it is good or bad, only that I think some things are inspired, but each person should decide.

I don't even really know how much of myself is better or worse, nor do I worry about it, why would I judge myself?

I don't claim to have the knowledge of good and evil, although when I fail I would assume I would be judgmental. So if something says they are of light, or of dark, they might be right or wrong, and probably a little of both, so going to try to find what I think is good in many things.

Some that think they are of dark, I see lots of good light, some that say they are of light, not so much.

Although you can think that bad if you want, or like it also.

Not telling you what you have to think.

However I am due beer and travel money. And I do know those in the way of that are a problem.

And I like this musical clip, maybe some will think it is bad, maybe some will think it is good, I think it is a refreshing musical clip, from a thoughtful story. Maybe a little bad, maybe a little good, but either way, I like the clip.

Edited on Sat Jun-25-11 03:01 PM by Kurovski
The mainline, the motherlode, the "godhead", at least from the western shores.

And their genius lies in their ability to talk so very many people out of that fact, the ability to evade and justify. Wrapping others who hold only similar beliefs into their power structure.

EDIT: the/that correction.
