In Vienna this week, opening the International Atomic Energy Agency's first major global meeting since the Japanese Fukushima reactor disaster, agency head Yukiya Amano proposed that his organisation conduct random checks on reactors.
Warning that "business as usual" was not an option for the nuclear industry, he called for drafting of stronger IAEA global standards within a year and for improvements to the independence and capability of national regulators.
More than 1000 delegates, including industry ministers and nuclear agency heads of member countries, are attending the meeting at IAEA headquarters, tasked with ensuring there won't be another Fukushima while maintaining the viability of nuclear power.
Despite shockwaves around the world from the March 11 disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, there was no agreement on random independent inspections.
"No more business as usual!" = Business as usual.
I don't think the guys and gals who voted not to have random inspections will ever have to spend time worrying about whether the water they're drinking has radioactive cesium in it, do you?
