Day 172: This is one in a series of posts assessing key developments during Gov. Rick Snyder's self-imposed 182 days to chart a new course for Michigan by July 1. For earlier posts go to mlive.com/stateofchange.
Though Gov. Rick Snyder says “we’re not going to ask for the reports” on embryonic stem cell research activities the 2012 budget stipulates that universities will file with the Department of Community of Health, a top lawmaker is still insisting on it.
Snyder says the budget language is non-binding. Lawmakers say it's required.
In letters to the schools, Rep. Bob Genetski, R-Saugatuck, said “I strongly encourage you to comply with the standards and intent set by the Legislature...The language ensures that universities collecting human embryonic stem cells must generate and submit reports to DCH regarding number of stem cell lines donated, the number used for research, the number held in storage and the number of research projects using stem cells derived from donated embryos.”
Genetski chairs the higher education appropriations subcommittee in the House and describes himself as one of the “leading” members on pro-life issues in the Legislature.
