There is finally some move toward compensation for the victims.

This was going on until 1974. It is, by some, called the North Carolina Holocaust.

1. Heard about it for the first time on NPR about an hour ago.
Awful awful story.. Dear GOD human beings can be arrogant and cruel!
I hope compensation is granted...although, of course, no amount could ever be enough.

4. I heard it listening to NRP (WAMU) on the way home tonight. They had
testimonies from several women, one who had no idea she had been sterilized until five years later when she was having children. Her illiterate grandmother had been essential coerced into signing the paperwork.

An absolute disgrace. OF course this country has had a lot of (and still has some) disgraces.

I had never heard of anything like this, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised about it. From what I understand this was more common prior to WWII, when Hitler's reign turned most of America against this type of thing.

18. She was 14 when she was sterilized (after giving birth to a child conceived
by a rape). When she was 19 and married, she realized she could not have children.

22. Sterilization causes you not to be able to have children. She found
out she was sterilized when she was having children? My family had two women forced into institutions where they were sterilized (in Iowa) in the 40s. In many cases they sterilized whole families so I am just lucky I am even here. Neither could have children after it was done. I am not criticizing her just curious about her case?

5. BushInc were the early promoters of eugenics in this country. Picked it up from their German cronies
would be the logical assumption.

9. They could have been sterilized after having children...
I read about one woman who, more than likely, had postpartum depression, but she was institutionalized and forced into this heinous program.

:(

15. Yes, sterilized after they had a child. One of the women on NPR had been raped
and they had to perform a C-section and while they were in there, they tied her tubes. She was 14 years old.

20. They were sterilized after have their children (obviously). Generally
they were sterilized after giving birth. It was very clear listening to it on NPR.

12. How many are aware that many more people, men and women,
Were forced to undergo sterilization by the state of California?

Suggestion for further reading, War on the Weak: Eugenics and America's Campaign to Create a Master Race" by Edwin Black

The fact of the matter is that our sterilization program was indeed an inspiration for Hitler and the Nazi program.

21. Wife's favorite Sunday school teacher was sterilized
in the late sixties under this program. She loved kids, and still teaches Sunday school and sings in the choir.

Very nice lady.

25. They want it back
I won't go into specifics, but just a couple years ago I was a law student in a prominent North Carolina Law school.

There is at least 1 professor that misses those days and actively and openly advocates things like forced sterlization. (And Debtor's prison)

The really sad part was that I was a minority voice when I spoke out in class against such atrocities. Ah the young leaders of tomorrow that shouted me down and told me how much better off we'd be without "those people and their brood". I couldn't stomach staying in the legal field (Although I wouldn't give them the satisfaction of my leaving, I made sure I still received my degree)

It is so depressing living down here sometimes.
